Comeback Bid Falls Short in 30-18 Loss to Iowa State

WACO, Texas -- Dawson Pendergrass had a pair of touchdown rushes and Monaray Baldwin had 117 yards receiving but Baylor football could not complete a second-half comeback, falling to Iowa State Cyclones, 30-18 on Saturday, before a Homecoming crowd of 43,528.



Pendergrass, the Baylor standout freshman running back, was stopped on fourth down with just over four minutes left, thwarting the potential comeback bid and allowing Iowa State to close out the game with its first win over the Bears in the last three meetings.



Pendergrass’s second TD of the day pulled the Bears (3-5, 2-3) within nine, 27-18, but the two-point conversion failed and then Iowa State (5-3, 4-1) capped a time-consuming drive with a 30-yard field goal by Chase Contreraz that gave the Cyclones a 12-point lead.



Baylor made things interesting, driving inside ISU’s 25-yard line, but Pendergrass was stopped short of the first-down marker on a fourth-and-three from the 23.



Iowa State cruised in the first half, going up 17-0 on a Rocco Becht 18-yard TD pass to Jayden Higgins, a one-yard run by Cartevious Norton and the first of three field goals by Contreraz, this one from 42 yards.



After Devyn Bobby picked off a Becht pass, the Bears got on the Board just before the half on an eight-yard run by Pendergrass, who finished with 76 yards combined rushing and receiving on 11 touches. Isaiah Hankins’ extra point was blocked, leaving the score at 17-6 going into intermission.



The Cyclones took their biggest lead of the game, 27-6, on a 49-yard TD run by Norton and a Contreraz field goal from 45 yards.



But Baylor answered with a pair of second-half touchdowns on a 69-yard pass from Blake Shapen to Baldwin and a five-yard run by Pendergrass. The Bears’ comeback fell short with two failed two-point conversions and the late stop by the Cyclones.



Shapen completed 24-of-41 passes for 239 yards and one touchdown with his first interception of the season. Baldwin had another big game with six catches for 117 yards.



Becht threw for 238 yards for the Cyclones, while Eli Sanders was the game’s leading rusher with 90 yards on 14 totes.



Staying home, Baylor will face former Southwest Conference rival Houston (3-5, 1-4) in their first meeting in the Big 12 next Saturday, Nov. 4, at a time to be announced. The Cougars were shut out by Kansas State, 41-0, on Saturday in Manhattan.
