PHILADELPHIA – Baylor sophomore running back Richard Reese has been named to the Maxwell Award Watch List, as announced Monday by the Maxwell Football Club.

Reese is one of 85 candidates named to the award’s watch list, which is presented annually to the most outstanding player in college football. He is one of 13 Big 12 players named to the list, including one of just three league running backs.

Already a preseason All-Big 12 honoree, Reese was tabbed a Freshman All-American in 2022 after shattering Baylor’s rookie rushing record with 972 yards on 198 carries. He added 14 touchdowns, which ranked fourth-best in BU single-season history, and finished just 28 yards shy of becoming the 16th 1,000-yard rusher in program history.

The Bellville, Texas, native logged three games of 100+ yards rushing and was twice named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week in 2022. For his efforts, Reese was also named the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year by the league coaches and Offensive Freshman of the Year in the state of Texas by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football a year ago.

The Maxwell Award has been presented to the College Player of the Year since 1937 and is named in honor of Robert “Tiny” Maxwell, a former standout at Swarthmore College and a renowned sportswriter and football official. Semifinalists for the award will be announced on Nov. 13, while the three finalists will be unveiled on Nov. 28.

The winner of the 87th Maxwell Award will be revealed as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on Dec. 7. The formal presentation of the Maxwell Award will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards in March 2024.
