BALTIMORE – Baylor redshirt junior quarterback Blake Shapen has been named to the 2023 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award Watch List, as announced by the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation, Inc., along with presenting sponsor A. O. Smith Corporation.

The award annually recognizes the top senior or upperclassman quarterback set to graduate with their class. Shapen is one of 48 quarterbacks named to the watch list, which includes all 10 FBS conferences and seven candidates from the Big 12.

Shapen, a 2022 All-Big 12 Honorable Mention selection, threw for 2,790 yards with 18 touchdowns last season in his first full year as the BU starter. He completed 63.3% of his passes, the fifth-best total in a single season in program history and also ranked ninth on BU’s all-time leaderboard for passing yards in a season. His 137.7 efficiency rating as a passer was just shy of cracking the top-12 in school history. Off the field, Shapen was tabbed a first-team Academic All-Big 12 member.

The 2023 Golden Arm Award winner will be announced on December 7. The preseason watch list, semifinalists, finalists and 2023 recipient are selected by the distinguished Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Selection Committee, a group of prominent college football journalists, commentators, announcers and former players. This year’s watch list was selected based on career player performance and expectations heading into the 2023 college football season.
