TYLER, Texas – Baylor sophomore running back Richard Reese has been named to the 2023 Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award watch list, as announced Thursday.

The award recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity to persist as well as determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals.

Additionally, the nominee must either be born in Texas, graduated from a Texas high school, or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year university.

Reese, who has already racked up multiple preseason honors including a spot on the All-Big 12 Team, Maxwell Award watch list and Doak Walker Award watch list, was tabbed a Freshman All-American in 2022 after shattering Baylor’s rookie rushing record with 972 yards on 198 carries. He added 14 touchdowns, which ranked fourth-best in BU single-season history, and finished just 28 yards shy of becoming the 16th 1,000-yard rusher in program history.

The Bellville, Texas, native logged three games of 100+ yards rushing and was twice named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week in 2022. For his efforts, Reese was also named the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year by the league coaches and Offensive Freshman of the Year in the state of Texas by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football a year ago. Reese was featured on the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Honorable Mention list three times throughout the 2022 campaign.

The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award watch list will be narrowed down to no more than 16 semifinalists in November, and then up to five finalists in December. They will be selected by broadcasters, commentators, journalists, fans and previous winners. The finalists will be brought to Tyler for The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Banquet scheduled for January 10, 2024, where the winner will be announced.

Historically, former Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty won the first Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award in 2013, and most recently former running back Abram Smith was named a finalist for the honor in 2021.
