WACO, Texas -- Exploding for 28 unanswered points, 17th-ranked Baylor pulled away from Texas State behind the explosive running of freshman Richard Reese for a 42-7 victory Saturday afternoon before a crowd of 45,597 at McLane Stadium.

Recording the Bears' first 100-yard rushing day of the season, Reese rushed for 156 yards on 19 carries (8.2-yard average) and scored on runs of 14, 52 and five yards to break the game open.

Bouncing back from a 26-20 double-overtime loss on the road at BYU, the Bears wrapped up non-conference play with their ninth-straight win over Texas State (1-2). Baylor rolled up 501 yards, including 293 on the ground.

Overcoming the first interception of his collegiate career, Blake Shapen completed 15-of-26 passes for 184 yards and one touchdown and also scored on a 35-yard run at the end of the half to give Baylor a 21-7 lead. Texas State got on the board with a 12-yard TD pass from Layne Hatcher to Ashtyn Hawkins, who caught 13 passes for 114 yards.

After the two teams traded turnovers in the third quarter, Shapen hit Gavin Holmes for a 28-yard touchdown pass that extended the lead to 28-7. Reese caught a 17-yard pass, then scored on a 52-yard run on a two-play drive, then capped the scoring with a five-yard TD run with 12:19 left in the game.

Baylor did lose the turnover battle for the first time this year, 3-1, but finished with a 501-268 edge in total offense and held its third-straight opponent below 90 yards rushing.

The Bears open Big 12 play against Iowa State (2-0) at 11 a.m. next Saturday, Sept. 24, in Ames, Iowa. The game will be televised on ESPN2 or ESPNU and will also be broadcast live on the Baylor Sports Radio Network from Learfield.
