WACO, Texas -- Sophomore quarterback Blake Shapen threw for 214 yards and two touchdowns – all in the first half – and also scored on a one-yard TD run as 10th-ranked Baylor opened the season in impressive fashion with a 69-10 win Saturday night at McLane Stadium over the UAlbany Great Danes.

Shapen got the rest of the night off after leading a six-play, 80-yard scoring drive on the opening series of the third quarter, capped off by a 50-yard TD run by Monaray Baldwin.

Baldwin had a career night, also scoring on a 47-yard TD grab in the first quarter and finishing with a team-high 84 yards on four catches.

Baylor also got first-half touchdowns from Craig "Sqwirl" Williams on a four-yard run, sixth-year senior Gavin Holmes on a 72-yard punt return and a 38-yard strike from Shapen to Hal Presley.

UAlbany's only first-half points were set up when the Bears went for it and failed on fourth-and-one from their own 34-yard line. Quarterback Reese Poffenbarger hooked up with Julian Hicks on a 17-yard TD pass on the last play of the first quarter to get the Danes on the board.

Engineering an 11-play, 80-yard in the last three minutes of the half, Shapen picked up a first down with a 16-yard run and then sprinted around the right end and hit the far pylon for a one-yard TD run on the final play of the half to give the Bears a 35-7 lead.

After UAlbany's defense essentially shut down Baylor's running game in the first half, Baylor used a four-back rotation of Williams, Taye McWilliams, Qualan Jones and freshman Richard Reese to pile up more than 250 yards rushing. Reese led the way with 62 yards on just seven carries and scored on a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns.

This was the Bears' most points in a season-opening game since beating Wofford, 69-3, on Aug. 31, 2013.

Baylor will go on the road for a top-25 matchup against No. 25 BYU (1-0) at 9:15 p.m. CDT next Saturday, Sept. 10, in Provo, Utah. The Cougars opened with an impressive 50-21 road win over USF.

In a matchup of future Big 12 Conference foes, Baylor defeated then-No. 19 BYU, 38-24, last year at McLane Stadium.
