IRVING, Texas – Baylor football senior linebacker Terrel Bernard has been named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the conference Monday.

Bernard led Baylor with nine tackles, including a pair of sacks, in the Bears’ first win over Oklahoma since 2014. The La Porte, Texas, native, spearheaded a dominant defensive performance that held OU to just 14 points, 26 below its season average, and its fewest scored in a single game since December 2014.

He became the sixth player in program history with at least 14 career sacks as he moved into a tie for fifth place on BU’s all-time leaderboard. Bernard now sits just 1.5 sacks shy of third place and 8.5 behind James Lynch, the Bears’ all-time leader.

Currently, Bernard ranks sixth in the Big 12 with 6.9 tackles per game. He has two double-digit outings so far this season, in addition to three nine-tackle performances.

This week’s recognition marks the fourth conference honor of the 2021 season for Baylor, as Bernard becomes the third defensive recipient of the year. BU’s JT Woods and Garmon Randolph were each named Co-Defensive Players of the Week previously this season, while Trestan Ebner has garnered Special Teams Player of the Week honors as well.

Bernard picks up his fourth-career Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week nod, having been named the recipient three times in 2019 and once in 2020. He is the first player in program history to receive the award four times in his career. The Bears have had a Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honoree in 17 of the last 18 seasons, with eight honors earned in the last three seasons.

Joining Bernard as this week’s Big 12 honorees are Kansas’ Devin Neal (offensive), Texas Tech’s Jonathan Garibay (special teams) and TTU’s Donovan Smith (newcomer).
