WACO, Texas – Redshirt freshman kicker John Mayers was named Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week, it was announced today by the Conference office.

Mayers had his first multi-field goal performance on Saturday in the victory over Texas Tech, including a clutch game-tying field goal from 19 yards out as the clock expired on regulation to send the game into overtime. He also hit a 37-yarder in the second quarter, one yard shy of his career-long mark.

The Flower Mound, Texas, native was also 3-for-3 in extra points on the day.

Mayers becomes the only Bear in program history to win Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week twice in one season and becomes just the second Bear behind Daniel Sepulveda to win the honor twice in a career (2005, 2006).

The Bears have had three Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week honors this season, the most in program history as Grayland Arnold earned the honor on Sept. 9 in addition to Mayers’ two honors. (Sept. 30, Oct. 14).

Overall, the Bears have won five weekly conference honors in 2019, the most since also having five in 2015.

The Bears travel to Oklahoma State for a 3 p.m. CT kick on Saturday, Oct. 19. The game will be televised live on FOX.
