<p class="MsoBodyText"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">Baylor has split its first two games of the year, posting a 69-10 win over UAlbany on Sept. 3 in the season lid-lifter, before falling at No. 21/25 BYU in a two-overtime thriller on Saturday in Provo, Utah.
Texas State has also split its first two matchups of the year, falling at Nevada 38-14 before posting a 41-12 rout over FIU on Saturday in San Marcos.

<p class="MsoBodyText"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">• Baylor has won all eight meetings in the series with Texas State, including seven meetings in Waco. The Bears opened the series with the Bobcats in 1909, with a 55-0 win. The largest margin of victory
came in a 76-0 win in 1916. After a 71-year hiatus in the series, the teams resumed playing each other with consecutive games in 1987-88 and again with BU wins in 2004, 2007 and last year in San Marcos, the first meeting at Texas State, a 29-20 win to open
the season. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoBodyText"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">• Baylor grinded out a 29-20 win at Texas State in the last meeting in the series, the season lid-lifter in 2021 in San Marcos.
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoBodyText"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">• The Bears used a stellar running game - that saw Trestan Ebner and Abram Smith combine for 238 yards on 39 carries - and an offensive line that didn't allow a sack to first-time starter Gerry Bohanon.
The BU defense set the tone with a pick-six from JT Woods in the opening minutes of the game. The Bears owned a 14-10 lead at halftime and were able to fight off a late charge from the Cats, who used a 10-play, 65-yard drive to cut the lead to 27-20. Baylor's
defense sealed the win with a safety as the Bobcats were attempting to drive to tie the game in their last possession.
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoBodyText"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">• Baylor rushed for 238 yards and threw for 148 on 15 of 24 in the air, holding Texas State to 156 yards in the air and 79 yards rushing. Ebner had 20 carries for 120 yards, while Smith chipped in 19 carries
and 118 yards. Brady McBride through three interceptions against a stout BU defense, going 20 of 40 for 156 yards. Woods, Jalen Pitre and Jairon McVea each hauled in interceptions.

<p class="MsoBodyText"><b><span style="font-size:11.0pt">NO. 21/25 BYU OUTLASTS BEARS IN DOUBLE-OT THRILLER IN PROVO<o:p></o:p></span></b></p>
<p class="MsoBodyText"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">• Baylor hit the road for its first test away from McLane Stadium and fell in a two-overtime thriller at No. 21/25 BYU, in front of 63,470 at a rocking LaVell Edwards Stadium.
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoBodyText"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">• The Bears battled the Cougars in a matchup of two future Big 12 Conference foes in an electric atmosphere in Provo. BU took its first lead on a Qualan Jones TD rush - his first of two on the night - but
after a missed PAT, the Cougars used an eight-play, 75-yard drive to conclude the half with a 10-6 lead. BU answered with a second-half opening drive of 77 yards for a 13-10 lead, and the teams traded TDs in the third and fourth quarters to take a 20-20 game
into the final seconds, where BYU kicker Jakye Oldroyd missed a potential game-winning field goal.
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoBodyText"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">• Both teams missed field goals - including the potential walk-off winner from Oldroyd - in the first OT period and BYU punched it in to open the second OT but missed the two-point conversion try. Baylor
then used 11 plays in its game-tying or game-winning bid on its possession, with Blake Shapen's fourth-down throw sailing high to allow the Cougars to escape with the win.

<p class="MsoBodyText"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">• BYU threw for 283 yards and rushed for 83, while Baylor rushed for 152 yards and threw for 137 in the loss but were handcuffed by 14 penalties for 117 yards. Craig Williams totaled 68 yards rushing on
17 carries, Jones had 67 yards on 16 carries and Shapen threw for 137 yards and a score to Ben Sims.

<p class="MsoBodyText"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">• A total of 23 Baylor football greats are on NFL rosters to open the 2022 season, which opened on Thursday with a Buffalo Bills win - featuring former Baylor star Terrel Bernard - over the Los Angeles Rams.

<p class="MsoBodyText"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">• Bernard is one of six Baylor players who were selected in the 2022 NFL Draft and is one of eight BU rookies set for the 2022 season.

<p class="MsoBodyText"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">• The Houston Texans boast an NFL-high four former Bears, including safety Grayland Arnold, wide receiver Drew Estrada, safety Jalen Pitre and long snapper Jon Weeks. The Tennessee Titans, Jacksonville Jaguars
and Carolina Panthers each boast two Baylor Bears on 2022 rosters. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoBodyText"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">• Texas State enters the matchup with the Bears fresh off a 41-12 win over FIU on Saturday in San Marcos.
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoBodyText"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">• The Bobcats are under the direction of fourth-year head coach Jake Spavital, an air-raid specialist, with a background as a QB coach and offensive coordinator, with stops at West Virginia, Texas A&M and
Cal. He served as the OC and QB coach for Texas A&M the year after Johnny Manziel won the Heisman Trophy in 2012, calling plays for the Aggies for three seasons before taking on the same role for a pair at WVU. He took over as the head coach at Texas State
in 2019, sporting a 10-28 overall record and coming off a 4-8 mark in 2021 that included a second-place finish in the West Division of the Sun Belt Conference. The Bobcats were victims of some hard luck in 2021, with narrow losses to Baylor, UIW, Troy, Georgia
State and Georgia Southern. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoBodyText"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">• TXST bounced back from a season-opening loss to Nevada to paste FIU, 41-12 on Saturday in a game that featured 226 yards rushing and passing for the Bobcats, a game after totaling one rushing yard on 25
carries at Nevada, where TXST threw for 293 yards. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoBodyText"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">• Through just two games, the Bobcats are averaging 27.5 points per game, 113.5 rushing yards and 259.5 passing yards a game. Defensively, TXST is allowing 25 points per game, 95 rushing yards and 197.5
passing yards. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoBodyText"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">• Layne Hatcher has thrown for 519 yards with five TDs and three interceptions on 49 of 82 passing. Calvin Hill has 205 yards rushing on 37 carries with one score. Ashtyn Hawkins has three TDs over his 15
catches and 142 yards.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoBodyText"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">• Defensively, Sione Tupou leads the team with 18 tackles, while Jarron Morris has 17 stops and three for a loss. Levi Bell has 15 tacvkles, 4.5 for a loss and 1.5 sacks. Kordell Rodgers owns a pair of interceptions.

<p class="MsoBodyText"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">• BU running back coach Justin Johnson was a graduate assistant on the Texas A&M staff in 2013, a staff that saw Texas State head coach Jake Spavital as the co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
The Aggies went 9-4 and won the Peach Bowl in 2013, with Spavital mentoring 2012 Hesiman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel.
