<p class="MsoNoSpacing"><b>IRVING, Texas</b> – Baylor football had a program-record 19 student-athletes earn 2017 Academic All-Big 12 recognition, the league announced Thursday. The Bears had 12 first team choices and seven second team honorees.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing">BU’s 12 first team selections were one shy of the program record set in 2014. Among the first team honorees was Chad Kelly, who is one of 10 on the list with a 4.00 GPA. In total, the Bears have produced 267 Academic All-Big 12 selections
since the league's inception in 1996, and 112 of those selections have come in the last eight years. The Bears have placed at least five on the first team in each of the last 13 seasons.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNoSpacing">Baylor’s first team choices were Blake Blackmar (second straight), Kyle Boyd (first time), Jonathan Hockman (first time), Iain Hunter (first time), Tyler Jaynes (third straight), Lenoy Jones Jr. (second straight), Marques Jones (first
time), Chad Kelly (first time), Patrick Lawrence (second straight), Chris Lutzel (second straight), Jairon McVea (first time) and Blake Murphy (second straight).<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNoSpacing">The Bears’ second honorees were Micheal Johnson (first time), Clint Kelly (first time), Ross Matiscik (second straight), Obim Okeke (first time), Wyatt Schrepfer (first time), Zach Smith (first time) and Verkedric Vaughns (first time).<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNoSpacing">To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their
first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better
GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.<o:p></o:p></p>
