WACO, Texas – Baylor men’s basketball’s fast start wasn’t enough to topple No. 7 Houston Saturday afternoon, dropping the contest 77-55 at Foster Pavilion.
Baylor started quick against Houston (15-1, 3-0), going up with as much of an eight-point lead but were unable to hold its momentum after UH rallied back. Despite holding the Cougars to their lowest field goal percentage of the conference season, Baylor could not overcome five Houston players in double figures as the Bears’ offense struggled, resulting in an 0-3 conference start.
Cameron Carr had 18 points for Baylor (10-5, 0-3), and Tounde Yessoufou had 11. Both Bears have reached double-digits in points for every contest this season.
THE RUNDOWN
The Cougars were the first on the board but the Bears answered quick, sinking four-of-five baskets from beyond the arc with Obi Agbim, Yessoufou and Carr all making triples in the first five minutes.
Houston responded in the 12th minute of the half, posting a 16-1 run and holding Baylor to only one point in six minutes. James Nnaji ended BU’s scoring lull earning the first dunk of the afternoon. UH continued its scoring streak and posted a 7-0 run, however, Baylor’s defense held Houston to zero field goals in the last six minutes and headed into the half down 33-26.
After the break, Houston went on a 19-5 run to continue to extend its lead. Dan Skillings Jr. earned a three; however, the Cougars responded with an 11-1 run.
Houston found its groove, going up by as much as 29 points against Baylor and sinking six threes in the second half. The Bears were unable to hold on and fell to top-10 Houston, 77-55.
WHAT’S NEXT
The Bears hit the road to face Oklahoma State on Tuesday, Jan. 13, in Stillwater, Okla at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
