WACO, Texas – Baylor softball opened the 2026 season with a 10-0 loss to Mississippi State on Thursday night at Getterman Stadium.

The Bulldogs jumped out early and used a seven-run third inning to pull away, handing the Bears just a second loss in the last five season openers. Faith Piper broke up Peja Goold’s no-hit bid with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, after BU was unable to mount a sustained offensive response after falling behind early.
Rundown

Mississippi State scored two runs in the opening inning and added another in the second before breaking the game open with seven runs in the third. The Bulldogs finished with 12 hits, including multiple extra-base hits, while capitalizing on early momentum at the plate.

Piper recorded Baylor’s lone hit with a single in the fifth inning. The Bears also drew three walks and turned a double play defensively but were unable to string together offense against Mississippi State starter Peja Goold, who struck out five across five shutout innings.

Cambree Creager made the start in the circle for Baylor, pitching 2.2 innings before Peyton Tanner provided 2.1 innings of relief.

Quotable

Head Coach Glenn Moore — “There are 52 games left in the year, so you can’t make too much out of a big win or a big loss right now. But to say I’m not disappointed would be silly. We wanted to compete, but what people need to understand is I threw two pitchers that haven’t pitched competitive ball routinely in over a year and a half, really since high school.

Did I think that they would have competed a little better than they did? Absolutely. But there were non-balls hit, you know, 250 feet with a Tomahawk swing, so once they got comfortable, they got in the box and just had a reckless abandon type of mentality up there, and made us pay for, even decent pitches. So hats off to what they did, but when you’re down that far, that quick, it kind of takes your cards away from you, what you can do offensively.”
