HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Baylor baseball dropped a 7-5 contest at Sam Houston on Tuesday night at Don Sanders Stadium in Huntsville.

The Bears (22-18) were unable to overcome a four-run fifth inning that saw the Bearkats (18-23) charge in front, despite BU sending the tying run to the plate in the top of the ninth. Redshirt junior infielder Travis Sanders went 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs, including a run-scoring double in the ninth.

Freshman right-hander Caldwell McFaddin made his first-career start on the mound and tossed a personal-best three innings, allowing just one run on two hits and a walk.

THE RUNDOWN
After retiring the Baylor side in order in the top of the first, SHSU started the scoring with a leadoff home run in the bottom half to put up the game’s first tally. Both sides went scoreless in the second, but then BU plated a pair in the top of the third on an RBI single from Sanders and a sacrifice fly off the bat of freshman designated hitter Dylan Perez.

The Bears added on in the fourth as junior catcher JJ Kennett singled in a run to make it 3-1. But, that’s when BU ran into trouble as two Bearkat hits, a Baylor error, two walks and a hit by pitch helped the home team score four runs in the bottom of the fifth and retake a 5-3 lead.

Baylor threatened to respond by loading the bases in the top of the sixth and cashed in on a bases-loaded walk to pull within a run, but a 5-4-3 double play ended the inning and kept Sam Houston ahead.

The Bearkats added some insurance in the home half of the sixth with a pair of two-out RBI knocks, extending the lead to 7-4, then retired six of the next seven BU hitters to send things to the ninth with a three-run advantage.

In the ninth, fifth-year senior outfielder Ty Johnson led off with a single and forced SHSU to turn to its closer. But, the Bearkat reliever induced a flyout and struck out a BU pinch hitter to bring Sanders to the plate with two away. Though the Baylor shortstop delivered an RBI double and brought the game-tying run to the plate, that would be all for the Bears as a strikeout finished things off and sealed the midweek win for Sam Houston.
