TUCSON, Ariz. – No. 16 Baylor volleyball fell to Arizona 3-0 on Friday night, inside McKale Center in Tucson.
Despite out-hitting the U of A .155 to .148, the Bears were unable to capitalize late in each frame, marking the first time this season Baylor has lost a match when hitting at a higher percentage than its opponent.
In the opening set, Baylor battled back from an early deficit to knot the match at 16, as Ksenia Rakhmanchik and Grace Carroll paced the attack with four kills in the frame. But Arizona held strong with a 7-3 run late to take the opening set 25-21.
The second set mirrored the first, with Baylor taking an early five-point lead, only to see the teams duke it out down the stretch. MJ McCurdy came alive with several key swings to notch six kills alongside Rakhmanchik, who carded her 10th kill of the night to get the Bears to set point at 30-29. A set that featured 14 ties and six lead changes saw one of each in the final three points, and the Wildcats used a 3-0 spurt to seal the match at 32-30.
Baylor jumped out to a 6-2 advantage early in the third behind Rakhmanchik’s steady play and strong serving from Harley Kreck. Arizona rallied midway through, only to see Baylor take a 20-18 lead. A 6-1 run, however, would flip the match in favor of the Wildcats, who would eventually seal it 25-23.
Rakhmanchik led the Bears with a career-high 17 kills, continuing her impressive freshman season. While McCurdy continued her strong road trip, tallying 10 kills and nine digs, eclipsing the 300 mark for her career (308). Defensively, Kreck and Morgan Madison tallied 11 digs apiece to lead the team.
Baylor is now 6-1 this season and 215-31 in the Ryan McGuyre era when holding opponents below .200.
The Bears will look to rebound next week as they return home to the Ferrell Center for a three-match homestand, beginning with Kansas State on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 7 pm.
