WACO, Texas – No. 20 Baylor volleyball improved to 4-0 in Big 12 Conference play for the first time since 2019 with a 3-0 sweep of Houston on Wednesday night at the Ferrell Center.

Moving to 12-3 on the season, the Bears have now won 10-straight against the Cougars and improved to 37-9 against Big 12 foes from the Lone Star State.

The opening set was a back-and-forth battle that had the Cougars within a pair at 17-15. From that point, Bailey Warren gave the Bears a boost from the service line, leading a 7-0 run that included the first three aces of her young career en route to a 25-16 BU win.

The Bears fell behind early in the second set as Houston raced out to a 13-7 lead. Behind five kills from Ksenia Rakhmanchik, Baylor chipped away and eventually tied the match at 21. The Bears rode that momentum and sealed the set when Tehani Ulufatu served up one of three aces on the night to clinch the 27-25 win.

Houston hung tough in the early portion of the third set until Baylor used a 6-0 run to race out to a 14-10 lead. The Bears would not look back, securing the sweep, their second this season in Big 12 play.

Surviving a scare from the Coogs in the second set, head coach Ryan McGuyre was pleased with the win, but knows his team has some work to do with a short turnaround against No. 18 Kansas.

“Being the first day of October, I feel like we've gotten a lot better, and we still haven't arrived yet,” he said. “I was both disappointed at some of the execution in the second set, but liked some grittiness to claw our way back into that match. Both these ladies [Tehani Ulufatu and Ksenia Rakmanchik] did a great job from the service line. That's a weapon that we've been pretty good with, especially in our wins. We know this conference is so good, so we'll appreciate every win we can get, but know we don't get much rest until the next one.”

Rakhmanchik led all players with a career-high 16 kills to pace the Baylor offense. Warren added 10 kills and a career-best four service aces, the first of her collegiate career, while junior middle blocker Gabrielle Essix also reached double figures with 10 kills and three blocks.
