HOUSTON, Texas – No. 21 Baylor volleyball battled its way to a gritty 3-1 road victory over Houston on Saturday afternoon at the Fertitta Center.
The win was the Bears’ first road victory since Sept. 24, extending their overall win streak over the Cougars to 11 straight.
Baylor held a slim lead throughout much of the opening set behind a strong attack (.441) and efficient side-out play (71%). The Bears led by as many as six late in the frame and closed it out 25-20 to take the early lead.
Houston responded with a dominant second set, using a fast start and strong blocking to pull away for a 25-14 win. The Cougars hit .343 in the frame, evening the match at one set apiece.
The pivotal third set featured nine ties and four lead changes as both teams traded momentum swings. Baylor broke free late, closing on a decisive 4-1 run fueled by kills from Ksenia Rakhmanchik and Victoria Davis to take it 25-20 and move back in front.
The fourth set turned into an instant classic. A battle from the start, it featured 27 ties and nine lead changes. Both teams survived a combined 11 set points before Baylor prevailed with a wild 35-33 win. It was the program’s highest point total in a set since 2003 and one of the 13 highest-scoring sets in NCAA Division I this season.
Freshman standout Ksenia Rakhmanchik delivered another dominant effort, leading Baylor with 18 kills, marking her fifth-straight match pacing the team in kills, points, and attempts. Manuela Bibinbe added 13 kills, while Bailey Warren, returning to her hometown, contributed 10 kills.
Setter Harley Kreck recorded her second-straight double-double, distributing 43 assists while posting a career-best 21 digs. Houston-area native Morgan Madison anchored the back row with 18 digs, her most since recording 18 against BYU last month. At the net, Victoria Davis tallied a season-high eight blocks, just one shy of her career high.
The Bears will return to the court on Thursday, Nov. 20, at 7 p.m., against Texas Tech. Tickets for the final home match against the Red Raiders can be purchased at Baylorbears.com.<https://baylorbears.evenue.net/list/VB>
