WACO, Texas – Baylor men’s basketball gave the fans a show on Monday night with a 96-81 win over UTRGV at Foster Pavilion to open the 2025-26 season.

With a complete roster over-haul in the offseason, the BU roster made their official debut and showcased serious depth with four Bears in double-figures. Leading RV/RV Baylor (1-0, 0-0) in points was redshirt sophomore guard Cameron Carr, who garnered a career high in points with 28, tying with Ja’Kobe Walter (2023) for most points in a Baylor debut game. Carr would earn a career high in field goals (nine), three-pointers (three), and free throws (seven).

Fifth-year senior guard Obi Agbim (16), senior guard Dan Skillings Jr. (15), and freshman guard Tounde Yessoufou (24) all earned double-figures in scoring as well in a strong showing for the Green and Gold. The contest would also mark Agbim’s 72nd and Skillings Jr.’s 42nd double-figure scoring games of their career.

Despite a slow start from the Bears, a 12-0 run at the end of the first half would help close the gap and eventually take the lead for the rest of the game. Both teams put up a field goal percentage of 49.2-percent, with both garnering impressive runs throughout the game. Baylor outrebounded UTRGV (0-1, 0-0) 42-26, including a 12-2 ratio in offensive boards.

THE RUNDOWN

The Bears opened with the starting lineup of Skillings Jr., Agbim, Michael Rataj, Yessoufou, and Carr. Issac Williams IV and Caden Powell were the first players off the bench.

After a slow start that put the Valqueros up 9-0, a trio of consecutive darts from behind the arc, two from Agbim and a sinker from Carr, got the Bears back on track, all in just one minute.

UTRGV held a 26-12 lead at the second media timeout after going on a 17-1 run over the course of four minutes. After the pause, the Bears responded with a 12-0 run to cut the lead. Agbim hit his third three-pointer of the night, continuing his active streak of 22 consecutive games with a three-pointer. Carr snagged a runaway dunk and continued that momentum with a three-point jumper, bringing the game to 26-20 in favor of UTRGV. Freshman Yessoufou scored two consecutive field goals to earn his first collegiate career points.

After a back-and-forth five minutes, Baylor took the lead for the fourth time in the matchup with 1:49 left in the half. In the last minute of the half, the Bears saw Rataj, Skillings Jr., and Yessoufou go on a 10-0 run, which included a halftime buzzer-beater three-pointer from the freshman, which made the fans inside Foster Pavilion electric. The Green and Gold headed to the locker room up 46-37.

After the half, Baylor made the first point thanks to the Cotonou, Benin, native. This propelled the Bears to score the next 13 out of 18 points. BU held UTRGV to zero offensive rebounds until the 18:31 mark in the second half.

The Bears continued to hold the lead with two dunks from Skillings Jr. and Powell and two beyond-the-arc baskets from Skillings Jr. and Yessoufou. Carr would put up eight more points for the Bears to stay with the lead at 78-63 with 7:19 left in the game.

After four minutes, Baylor continued to maintain the lead, keeping the Valqueros to 85-71. Powell would go four-for-four at the line, as well as Yessoufou earning his tenth field goal in a row. Yessoufou would end the night going a perfect 10-for-10 in field goals despite beginning the game 0-for-6.

BU put up 11 points in the last two minutes of the game, including a poster dunk from Carr to end the night with the fans at a buzz and earn his 28th point of the night.
