PARIS – No. 16 Baylor women’s basketball opened the season with an upset win at Adidas Arena over No. 7 Duke, 58-52. The Bears (1-0) were led by a 24-point performance from Taliah Scott to down the Blue Devils (0-1) in the first nationally televised game of the 2025-26 season.



After opening with a seven-point unanswered run, Littlepage-Buggs’ eight-point first quarter brought the Bears back even twice before Duke went up by two in the final seconds of the quarter.



Kiersten Johnson scored the first points of the season for BU, then blocked a shot on the defensive end to help extend Duke’s scoring drought to more than four minutes midway through the first quarter. Scott followed with her first points as a Bear, hitting a deep three-pointer to keep Baylor within striking distance.



In a second half of runs, Baylor surged with 10 straight points that featured the lone true freshman, Marcayla Johnson, scoring her first career points. After Yuting Deng also scored her first points as a Bear to give BU its first lead of the game and Scott added a pair more, Duke responded with six unanswered to end the half and take a 33-29 lead into the break.



The Bears fought from behind in the third quarter, trading blows with the Blue Devils before evening the score as time expired. Baylor’s 14-10 third frame included a key five-point run.



Baylor took control early in the fourth quarter, fueled by momentum from a big three-pointer by Jana Van Gytenbeek that all but iced the game for the Bears.



It was a big defensive night for Baylor, which finished with nine blocked shots and four steals while scoring 14 points off Duke’s 15 turnovers.



BU’s walking double-double, Littlepage-Buggs, recorded her 31st career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Scott, Baylor’s new walking bucket, had her 22nd career game with 20 or more points, finishing with 24 after a 15-point second half.



K. Johnson, in her first game as a Bear, matched her career high with eight rebounds, while true freshman M. Johnson added four points in 19 quality minutes on the European hardwood.



The Bears move to 1-0 when playing outside North America and 16-1 when playing outside the United States.



BU returns home to Foster Pavilion on Sunday to face Lindenwood. Tickets are available now for tipoff at 2 p.m. CT.
