CARLSBAD, Calif. — Baylor women’s golf settled into a tie for 26th place with a 23-over 311 on Saturday at the NCAA Championship on Omni La Costa’s North Course.
Baylor's solid start was undone by a struggle on the homeward half for the second-straight day. Starting on No. 10 on Friday, the Bears tamed the back nine to the tune of 4-under as a team but counted a score of 17-over on the homeward half on Saturday.
For the round, Malena Castro carded Baylor’s best score with a 4-over 76 and is tied for 103rd. BaiMai Seema holds Baylor's top spot overall with a tie for 67th place at 5-over.
The top 15 teams after Sunday's third round will advance to the final round on Monday. Additionally, the top nine individuals on non-advancing teams will make it through to the fourth round. As of Saturday night, the team cutline stands at 13-over while the individual cutline is at 3-over.
Mississippi State’s Avery Weed surged into the lead, sitting at 7-under, two shots clear of South Carolina’s Eila Galitsky.
THE RUNDOWN
Seema opened with a steady front nine, making just two bogeys at Nos. 6 and 9 to make the turn in 38. A triple bogey at No. 11 and a bogey at No. 12 cost her four shots, before she closed her final seven holes at 1-under to card a 5-over 77.
Castro got off to a good start with a birdie at No. 3 but closed the front nine with bogeys at Nos. 5, 8 and 9. A bogey at No. 10 was offset by a birdie at No. 11, ahead of two more bogeys at Nos. 14 and 17 to finish the round and move into a tie for 103rd.
Ashleen Kaur also finished Saturday tied for 103rd on the heels of a 7-over 79. A quick birdie at No. 2 put her in red figures through eight holes before a bogey at No. 9 saw her make the turn at even par. The sophomore dropped over par with another bogey at No. 11, before playing her final six holes at 6-over.
Silje Ohma also carded a 7-over 79 to drop into a tie for 129th. The junior bounced back from a double bogey at No. 1 with a birdie at No. 2. Following six-straight pars, she made a bogey at No. 9 to turn at 2-over. A double bogey at No. 11 started a six-hole stretch that the Bergen, Norway, native played at 5-over to fall to 11-over for the championship.
Bridget Boczar shot an 8-over 80 to fall into 129th with Ohma. The junior was rolling along at 2-over after a birdie at No. 11. The hardest hole on the course bit Boczar, though, as she carded a nine at the par-4 13th, to derail her round.
