NORMAN, Okla. — Putting together its best performance since February, a short-handed Baylor women's golf team finished Tuesday in fifth place at the NCAA Norman Regional at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club as darkness suspended the final round.
Play was halted at 7:40 p.m. CT on Tuesday after BU finished its round and locked in its 3-over 867 score. Twelve shots clear of sixth-place Tulsa, who also finished, BU is 13 shots ahead of seventh-place Oregon State. The Beavers must make up those 13 shots over the final 11 holes on Wednesday morning when play resumes at 9 a.m.
Barring a miracle finish by the Beavers, the Bears are in position to make five straight and seven of the last eight NCAA Championship fields. Stanford clinched the team title with a 23-under 841, nine shots in front of second-place Northwestern.
Silje Ohma shot her third round at par or better this week with a final-round 71, leading the Bears with a fourth-place finish. Her 5-under 211 was three shots off the pace of 8-under 208 set by Andrea Revuelta of Stanford. Tuesday marked the third time in the last four regionals where Baylor has had an individual finish in the top 5.
THE RUNDOWN
Ohma began with a squeaky-clean opening nine, highlighted by a birdie at No. 13 to make the turn with a bogey-free 35. Her lone blemish on the day came with a bogey at No. 2 before she bounced back immediately with a birdie at No. 3 and cruised to the house with six more pars.
Bridget Boczar polished off a good showing in her second NCAA regional with an even-par 72 on Tuesday to tie for 16th. A steady opening nine saw her make book-end birdies at Nos. 10 and 18 around a pair of bogeys at Nos. 13 and 17. The junior transfer jumped back into red numbers with a birdie at No. 3, but gave a shot back with a bogey at No. 4 to shoot her career-first NCAA postseason round at par or better.
Ashleen Kaur shot a 4-over 76 to close out the regional in a tie for 25th. Making a birdie at the opening hole at No. 10, Kaur played her next seven holes at 5-over par before closing the front nine with another birdie at No. 18. The sophomore added another birdie at No. 4 to get back to 2-over. However, a double-bogey at No. 8 saw her finish at 3-over for the tournament.
Malena Castro strung together a solid 3-over 75 to finish the week tied for 38th. An opening-hole bogey at No. 10 was offset by a birdie at No. 15, as the freshman continued to impress on the par-3s this week. A double at No. 17 and a bogey at No. 18 dropped her to 3-over at the turn. She responded nicely with birdies at Nos. 3 and 6 to get to 1-over, before bogeys at Nos. 7 and 9 dropped her back to 3-over for the day.
BaiMai Seema put together her strongest round of the week, shooting an even-par 72 to finish the week tied for 53rd. Making two bogeys in her first three holes, Seema rebounded nicely playing her next 14 holes at 3-under par, thanks to birdies at Nos. 17, 6 and 8. A bogey at No. 9 dropped her back to even and 12-over for the championship.
