TUCSON, Ariz. – After clinching the series on Saturday, Baylor baseball was unable to finish off a weekend sweep of No. 12 Arizona on Sunday, dropping an 11-6 contest at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson, Ariz.
The Wildcats used a 10-run first inning to surge past the Bears, though BU did well over the final eight frames to scatter seven hits and allow just one more run. Five Bears logged multi-hit games, including senior infielder Tyriq Kemp who set a career high with four knocks. Sophomore catcher JJ Kennett drove in three runs out of the nine spot in the batting order and redshirt sophomore infielder Travis Sanders scored three times after reaching twice on walks and racking up two hits.
Ultimately, Baylor left 12 men on base and had chances to get back in it late, as the team left runners on the corners in the sixth and had baserunners reach in each of the first seven innings.
THE RUNDOWN
After Baylor left a pair of baserunners aboard in the top of the first, Arizona put up 10 runs in the home half on eight hits, two walks and a hit batter.
BU got on the board in the top of the second as Sanders walked and later scored on Kennett’s RBI groundout. A solo home run for the Wildcats in the bottom of the third moved the scoreline to 11-1, but Kennett struck again with an RBI single in the top of the fourth to cut into the deficit.
Back-to-back doubles to start the fifth by freshman infielder Pearson Riebock and redshirt sophomore infielder Jack Little brought the Bears another run at 11-3. Little came across on Kemp’s third knock of the day, then Baylor added another with Kennett’s third RBI of the afternoon, a run-scoring fielder’s choice. After an Arizona error allowed two baserunners to move up, BU scored its fourth run of the frame on an RBI groundout by redshirt senior outfielder Enzo Apodaca, cutting the Wildcat lead in half at 11-6.
That’s as much as either side would get though, as Baylor’s two-out rally in the sixth was snuffed out by a fly out that left runners on the corners. Each of the first two batters reached for the Bears in the seventh, but after a fly out and a strikeout, a baserunning miscue ended the frame with zero runs to show for it.
The Bears couldn’t quite crack the Wildcat leverage arms in the final two frames, but the BU bullpen matched it with five straight zeros to end the ballgame. Redshirt sophomore southpaw Caleb Jameson turned in two scoreless innings before sixth-year senior right-hander Patrick Hail tossed a 1-2-3 seventh. Sophomore lefty RJ Ruais and redshirt senior righty Andrew Petrowski combined to keep UA off the scoreboard in the eighth as well.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On today’s ballgame…
“Getting behind 10-0 is tough sledding. They obviously came out swinging and took it to us. From that point on, the guys competed and battled hard. Our bullpen gave us a shot to get back in the game, our offense tried to get back in the game, but you know we just couldn’t get the big hit at the right time. We had guys on base, we competed up and down the lineup. We had good at-bats and there was no quit in the guys. We’re not happy about losing that ballgame, but we played a really good team that had their backs against the wall and came out and got after us. We give them credit, but we’ll go home with the series win and get going again on Tuesday.”
WHAT’S NEXT
Baylor (19-8) returns home to start a five-game homestand on Tuesday, April 1, against HCU (17-8) at 6:30 p.m. at Baylor Ballpark in Waco.
