WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball mashed its way to a 13-4 win against UT Arlington on Tuesday night at Baylor Ballpark in Waco, riding 13 hits and six scoreless appearances from BU pitchers to victory.
Four different Bears racked up multi-hit games, including redshirt sophomore infielder Travis Sanders who led the way with three hits, two of which being doubles. Senior outfielder Ty Johnson drove in three runs, while redshirt senior designated hitter Hunter Simmons, freshman infielder Pearson Riebock and redshirt sophomore outfielder Gavin Brzozowski each added two hits. Junior outfielder Caleb Bergman capped off the hit parade with his first-career home run.
The pitching staff made strong contributions as well, with six of the nine different arms that appeared on the mound tossing scoreless outings. Senior righty Will Glatch struck out the side, while sixth-year senior closer Gabe Craig picked up two punchouts in the late innings.
Sixth-year senior lefty Bryson Bales earned the win after throwing a scoreless second inning, allowing one hit and one walk with one strikeout.
THE RUNDOWN
Baylor got things going in a hurry, putting up six runs in the second inning on four hits, two walks and a hit-by-pitch. Johnson and sophomore catcher JJ Kennett picked up RBIs on bases-loaded free passes before redshirt senior outfielder Enzo Apodaca drove in two runs with a sharp single. Simmons and Riebock capped off the rally with back-to-back run-scoring singles to give BU a 6-0 lead after two frames.
The Mavericks got two runs back in the top of the third on a solo home run and an RBI knock to cut into the Bears’ lead, then pulled one closer in the fourth as a run crossed the plate on a wild pitch to make it 6-3.
In the bottom half, BU responded with four consecutive hits from Simmons, Riebock, Brzozowski and Sanders to plate two runs, extending the advantage to 8-3. Johnson followed suit with an RBI fielder’s choice, his second RBI of the night, to bring the lead to 9-3.
In the fifth, the two sides traded runs as UTA benefitted from an RBI double and BU made use of a RBI single off the bat of redshirt sophomore infielder Jack Little to make it 10-4.
Baylor added two more in the sixth as Johnson doubled in Sanders and later swiped third and scored on a UTA error to push the scoreline to 12-4.
Glatch came on to start the seventh and matched his career high by fanning the side, preceding Bergman’s pinch-hit homer in the bottom of the inning that accounted for the final tallies of the night.
After Craig put up a zero in the eighth with a pair of punchouts, redshirt senior right-hander Drew Leach sealed things in the ninth on just 10 pitches.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On the offense tonight…
“We wanted to get some other guys some at-bats and we finally got to move Tyriq [Kemp] up, so that was good to see. I thought the guys swung the bats well up and down the lineup. I love the production we can get from the bottom of our order when you’ve got Ty Johnson down there, and [JJ] Kennett, [Cortlan] Castle and [Travis] Sanders. We’ve got a lot of guys that can do damage, so we’ll keep moving them around the best we can, but so far I think the lineup has been working pretty good.”
Junior OF Caleb Bergman
On hitting his first-career home run…
“Nothing I’ve ever felt before in baseball, my first one … It means so much to have the few at-bats I’ve had and go out there and just kind of let it rip. It’s awesome. It felt great.”
WHAT’S NEXT
