WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball slugged its way to a 19-4 run-rule victory over Kansas State on Sunday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark.

The Bears (16-7, 2-4) were able to salvage the final game of the three-game set with K-State (16-7, 5-1) thanks to an offensive explosion of 19 runs on 16 hits. Five different Bears had multi-hit performances, including three-hit efforts from senior outfielder Wesley Jordan and freshman infielder Pearson Riebock. Eight different BU hitters drove in runs, including a four-RBI day from sophomore catcher JJ Kennett and big flies from Jordan and redshirt senior designated hitter Hunter Simmons.

Baylor also got strong performances on the mound as freshman southpaw Carson Bailey allowed just two runs on five hits in 4.1 innings of work, tying a career high with seven punchouts. Senior righty Will Glatch also made his seventh-consecutive scoreless outing of the year, retiring all four batters he faced to cap off the run-rule.

THE RUNDOWN
After Bailey struck out five through the first three frames and held the Wildcats scoreless, Baylor got the scoring started thanks to an RBI base knock from Jordan and an RBI bunt single from Riebock, taking a 2-0 lead into the fourth.

K-State answered back in the top of the fourth, mounting a two-out rally and tying the ballgame with a two-run bloop single. As Bailey eclipsed the 90-pitch mark, junior righty Grayson Murry entered and struck out each of the first two batters he faced to end the fifth and strand a Wildcat on base.

But, the Bears let loose in the fifth, putting up six runs on six hits after sending 10 men to the plate. Jordan started the hit parade with a solo shot over the left field wall before Kennett cleared the bases with a three-run double. Senior infielder Tyriq Kemp followed suit with a run-scoring double and redshirt senior outfielder Enzo Apodaca drove him in with an RBI single, putting Baylor ahead 8-2.

The Wildcats cut into the lead in the following frame with a two-run blast, but once again Baylor responded with an 11-run inning to pull away. BU batted around for the second-straight inning, sending 16 batters to the plate and racking up five hits while K-State walked eight. Senior outfielder Ty Johnson got things started with a two-run double, then redshirt sophomore first baseman Gavin Brzozowski singled in another run. After Johnson scored on a double play ball, the Bears added seven unearned runs thanks to an RBI single by Jordan, a three-run homer by Simmons and four-straight bases-loaded walks.

Glatch went back out for the seventh with a 19-4 lead and retired the side of K-State pinch hitters in order to seal the series finale in run-rule fashion.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On salvaging the weekend series…
“It was a big bounce back for sure. It just tells you a little bit about their character. Those were two gut-wrenching, take-it-on-the-chin losses, and disappointing. We had a choice to either lay in the mud or dust ourselves off and come back and fight, and I think you saw who we are.”

Freshman INF Pearson Riebock
On getting three hits on his 19th birthday…
“It was a pretty amazing moment. Waking up, you’re always a little happier on your birthday and then coming out here, getting a really good win and going 3-for-4, no complaints at all. You could tell, one through nine, we had a lot of competitive at-bats and everyone was just getting it to the next guy and getting timely hits when we needed them.”

Freshman LHP Carson Bailey
On his confidence on the mound…
“It just comes from me wanting to do it for the team. After being down on Friday and Saturday, it was time for me to come out and make a change and be confident. It was a big change from my outing last weekend, part of that was my slider. I was able to throw it for strikes, so me and Sned [pitching coach Sean Snedeker] had some good motion going.”
