SAN MARCOS, Texas – Baylor baseball topped Texas State, 19-3, Tuesday night at Bobcat Ballpark in San Marcos and remained undefeated in midweek ballgames in 2025.
The Bears scored 10 runs in the sixth inning, a single-inning high for the Mitch Thompson era and most by the Bears since setting a program record in 2021 (17, vs. Kansas State). Three Bears had multi-hit performances, including redshirt senior outfielder Enzo Apodaca who doubled twice and homered while driving in four runs.
On the mound, six arms combined to hold the Bobcats to just three runs which came on one swing, a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning. For the 11th time this year, BU pitchers allowed two walks or fewer, winning the free base battle by a large margin.
THE RUNDOWN
Baylor jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after freshman infielder Pearson Riebock drove in Apodaca with a two-out, opposite-field RBI single. However, despite redshirt sophomore left-hander Caleb Jameson striking out the side in the bottom half, Texas State benefitted from a three-run homer to go in front 3-1 after the first frame.
After the two sides traded zeros in the second, BU struck for three runs in the top of the third thanks to redshirt sophomore infielder Travis Sanders’ bases-loaded walk and a two-out, two-strike, two-run single from senior outfielder Ty Johnson that made it 4-3.
In the top of the fifth, Apodaca and senior outfielder Wesley Jordan hit back-to-back solo jacks to extend the Bears’ advantage to 6-3 after redshirt senior right-hander Andrew Petrowski and freshman righty Camden Clewett each pitched scoreless innings. Another run crossed the plate on a wild pitch to increase the Baylor lead to 7-3.
BU put up 10 runs in the top of the sixth on just four hits, sending 14 men to the plate and having nine-consecutive Bears reach safely with two outs. Johnson and senior infielder Tyriq Kemp each produced two-run singles, while Apodaca cleared the bases with a double. Riebock put the cherry on top of the inning with a two-run triple, marking the largest-scoring inning of the Thompson era.
Redshirt sophomore first baseman Gavin Brzozowski got on the board with a two-run long ball in the top of the seventh, his first of the year, pushing the total to 19-3. That’s where things would stay, as senior right-hander Caleb Bunch finished it off with a scoreless inning to complete the run-rule victory.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On positives outside of the scoreline…
“I liked that we played really good defense. I liked that we continued to throw a lot of different guys on the mound and virtually every guy out there goes and does a nice job. I loved that we took 14 walks or hit batters on offense. We had some at-bats that were fantastic. There’s still room for improvement, but you’ve got to like a 19-3 road win. There’s lots of stuff to be happy about tonight.”
Redshirt Senior OF Enzo Apodaca
On his approach at the plate…
“Today, I just tried slowing everything down. These past couple weeks, I’ve been fishing for stuff and gripping at the plate, so today I just tried to simplify things and see the ball down the middle, hit it where it’s pitched and not try to do too much. That’s baseball, man.”
