LAWRENCE, Kan. – Baylor baseball erased a five-run deficit and salvaged its series at Kansas on Sunday with a 9-7 victory at Hoglund Ballpark in Lawrence, Kan.

The Bears used a five-run fifth inning and plated two runs in the eighth to get past the Jayhawks. Senior right-hander Will Glatch was exceptional in relief, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings with three strikeouts in earning his first-career win. Then, sixth-year senior righty Gabe Craig struck out the side in order in the ninth to pick up his fourth save of the year.

THE RUNDOWN
Freshman left-hander Carson Bailey was sharp early, picking up two strikeouts through the first two innings. However, Baylor couldn’t capitalize on a couple early chances offensively, leaving two on base in both the second and third innings after a pair of walks in each frame.

In the bottom of the third, Kansas made use of two two-out walks and hit a grand slam to take a 5-0 advantage. BU answered back with a couple of runs in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by senior catcher Cortlan Castle and an RBI groundout by Tyriq Kemp, cutting into the KU lead at 5-2.

After the Jayhawks turned to their bullpen in the fifth, Baylor struck for five runs behind three doubles, two walks and a hit-by-pitch, including a two-run double by redshirt sophomore infielder Travis Sanders and a two-run two-bagger by Kemp. An RBI single by redshirt sophomore infielder Jack Little added on to the rally, as BU took a 7-5 lead after four and a half frames.

KU wouldn’t go quietly, as a leadoff home run in the home half of the fifth made it a one-run game at 7-6. The Jayhawks tied it at 7-7 in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double, but that’s when Glatch came on with two outs in the inning to strike out the first batter he faced, stranding the go-ahead run at third base.

Thanks to a strike ‘em out, throw ‘em out double play to start the bottom of the seventh and another inning-ending punchout, Glatch put up another zero and allowed Baylor to charge in front in the top of the eighth. The first four Bears reached on four-consecutive singles, including RBI knocks by redshirt senior designated hitter Hunter Simmons and freshman infielder Pearson Riebock, giving BU a 9-7 lead.

Glatch came back out for a 1-2-3 eighth, then turned it over to Craig who struck out the side in order, earning him his fourth save of the season.

STAT OF THE DAY
5 – Baylor erased a five-run deficit, marking its largest come-from-behind victory of the Thompson Era.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On the team’s response after trailing 5-0…
“Well I’m proud as heck of them. The fight, the guts and the courage to stay in it against a really good team on the road after they’ve beat you the first two days and come out with a W is huge. I think it’s a testament to who they are as people and a testament to their character. I’m really proud.”

On the bullpen’s performance…
“We felt really good about the guys we had in the bullpen today. Grayson Murry, Will Glatch and Gabe Craig, I thought all three of them were fantastic. Glatch has some dirty stuff. It’s swing and miss stuff. He’s earned the right to pitch a lot of big innings for us. He’s got great confidence going.”

WHAT’S NEXT
Baylor (14-5) returns to the Lone Star State and travels to face Texas State (8-11) on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Bobcat Ballpark in San Marcos, Texas.
