KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Coming off a second-round win over Kansas State, No. 7 seed Baylor men’s basketball will face off against No. 2 seed and ninth nationally ranked Texas Tech on Thursday night in the quarterfinals of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship at T-Mobile Center at 6 p.m. CT.
The game will be broadcast live on ESPN, with Roxy Bernstein (play-by-play) and Sean Farnham (analyst) on the call. The game will also be on the Baylor Sports Media Network, with the Voice of the Bears, John Morris detailing the action alongside Baylor Hall of Famer Pat Nunley (analyst).
Baylor (19-13, 10-10) is seeking its first conference tournament title in program history. The Bears posted a second-round rout of No. 10 seed Kansas State on Wednesday night, cruising to the win over the Wildcats behind an explosive performance from Jayden Nunn off the bench.
Baylor will be meeting Texas Tech (24-7, 15-5) for the second time in 2024-25, after falling on Feb. 4 to the No.13/12 Red Raiders, 73-59 in Lubbock. The Red Raiders own an 84-65 lead in the series and a 5-3 in meetings at neutral-site venues.
Texas Tech finished second in the conference in the regular season, led by Big 12 Player and Newcomer of the Year JT Toppin.
STORY LINES
• Baylor has advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2025 Big 12 Championships in Kansas City and will face off with No. 9/9 Texas Tech, the No. 2 seed, on Thursday at 6 p.m. on ESPN.
• The Bears posted a second-round rout of No. 10 seed Kansas State on Wednesday night, cruising to the win over the Wildcats behind an expolosive performance from Jayden Nunn off the bench.
• Baylor will be meeting Texas Tech for the second time in 2024-25, after falling on Feb. 4 to the No. 13/12 Red Raiders, 73-59 in Lubbock.
• The Red Raiders own a 84-65 lead in the series and a 5-3 in meetings at neutral-site venues.
• Baylor owns a 19-26 all-time record in the Big 12 Championships, including a 15-22 mark in Kansas City and a 11-16 mark under Drew. The Bears are seeking their first conference tournament title in program history.
• In the win over K-State, Baylor saw Nunn go for 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting off the bench, while VJ Edgecombe had his second double-double of the year with 19 point and 10 boards. Norchad Omier had his 20th double-double of the year and the 88th of his career with 12 points and 14 rebounds.
• BU is 15-2 in 2024-25 when holding an opponent under 70 points and are 374-61 under Coach Scott Drew. BU is 7-0 on the year and 166-9 under Drew when holding its foe to under 60 points.
• Against K-State, Omier recorded his 20th double-double of the season, the most in program history and passing Jerome Lambert (1993-94). It marked his BU-record eighth straight double-double of the season.
• Omier’s 88th career double-double, moved him into sole possesion of second-most in NCAA history, passing Tim Duncan of Wake Forest and Armando Baccott of North Carolina.
• With 1,660 career rebounds, Omier ranked 12th in NCAA history.
• Edgecombe continues to climb draft boards, averaging a team-leading 17.4 points per game over his last 18 games, shooting 46.2% from the field, 38.9% from three and 81% from the free-throw line.
• Edgecombe ranked ninth in the Big 12, averaging 16.7 points per game in conference play and with 15.5 points per game, he is on pace for the fifth-best scoring average by a freshman in BU history.
• Robert Wright now holds Baylor’s single-season freshman assist record (142), which comes after setting the single-game freshman record of 13 against Norfolk State earlier this season.
• The Bears have lost 35 games and counting due to injuries this season: Langston Love (14), Jeremy Roach (6), Jalen Celestine (4) VJ Edgecombe (2) and Josh Ojianwuna (9) (Out for the season).
• Of the 1,305 minutes of game time this season, Baylor has had it’s full complement of rotation players for just 189:56 (14.9%).
• Baylor has 8+ Big 12 wins for a 14th-straight season after winning 8+game just three times in the league’s first 15 years.
• According to KenPom, BU enters the postseason with the ninth-toughest schedule in the country and the third-toughest in the Big 12
• 10 of Baylor’s 13 losses have come against teams that have been ranked in the top-10 at some point this season, while Gonzaga, Tennessee, UConn, Iowa State and Houston have been ranked in the top 4. Eleven of the 13 losses are Quad-1 losses (5-11)
• Baylor has 72 conference wins over the last six seasons, second only to Kansas’ 75, the next closest team in that span is Texas Tech with 59.
