WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball handled Sam Houston Tuesday night by a final of 9-2 at Baylor Ballpark in Waco.

BU (13-3) won its fifth-straight ballgame, sweeping the homestand behind contributions from six different Bears with multi-hit efforts and nine different arms holding the Bearkats (3-13) to just two runs.

Freshman infielder Pearson Riebock launched his first-career home run, a two-run shot to open the scoring in the second inning, while four other Bears drove in at least one run.

On the mound, nine different arms combined to fan 11 in the win. Redshirt senior right-hander Patrick Hail shined out of the pen, punching out a season-high three batters in two scoreless innings of work, while fellow redshirt senior righty Drew Leach picked up the win with 1.1 scoreless frames and two strikeouts.

THE RUNDOWN
Baylor got on the board in the bottom of the second inning with Riebock’s two-run jack providing the early advantage. SHSU responded in the fourth as one run crossed the plate on an infield single to cut into the BU lead.

In the home half of the fourth, the Bears answered right back as redshirt sophomore infielder Jack Little provided an RBI base hit to extend the lead to 3-1. BU added on in the sixth thanks to an RBI knock by senior infielder Tyriq Kemp, who also later scored on an error as the lead swelled to 5-1.

In the eighth, Baylor piled on with four runs in the frame on a Little sacrifice fly, a Bearkat error and back-to-back run-scoring hits by senior outfielder Wesley Jordan and redshirt senior designated hitter Hunter Simmons.

Though Sam Houston got one back in the top of the ninth, senior closer Gabe Craig came on the shut the door and secure the victory, striking out both batters he faced to end the game.

STAT OF THE DAY
5 – Baylor’s five-game win streak is tied for the second-longest win streak under third-year head coach Mitch Thompson. This is the fourth time in the Thompson era that the Bears have won at least five in a row.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On the victory…
“I mean, you throw nine guys and get 11 punchouts and only two walks, that’s pretty good. We got 14 hits, that’s a well-played game. Probably my favorite thing about watching our offense is that we’re not dependent on one guy. The bottom half of the lineup performed great today, and they were able to turn it over to the top, so we got to do a lot of damage as an offense.”

On tonight’s attendance…
“I’ll be honest with you – our guys were talking about it before the game started. They said ‘look at the crowd, look at the people here, this is going to get exciting.’ I keep telling them if we win, they will pack this place, I’ve seen it. It’s time for us to start doing that. I was really proud of the crowd, and I’m thankful for them. I think they walked away and said ‘hey, that was a fun ballgame, these guys are playing well, it’s fun to watch, let’s put on our green and gold and get to Baylor Ballpark’.”

Freshman INF Pearson Riebock
On his first-career home run…
“Yeah, I was hoping to get one out, but it’s really just about trying to hit the ball as hard as I can to the middle of the field. But yeah, when I hit it, I was like man, I really hope nobody robs this one.”

Redshirt Senior RHP Drew Leach
On the team’s winning start…
“It’s hard to complain when you’re winning, right? Everybody’s loving each other. We’re just a really tight-knit group. It’s been one of my favorite teams I’ve ever been a part of. We just need to keep that ball rolling.”

WHAT’S NEXT
Baylor (13-3) hits the road to open Big 12 play at Kansas (14-2). The three-game series between the Bears and the Jayhawks begins on Friday, March 14, at 6 p.m. at Hoglund Ballpark in Lawrence, Kan.
