WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball finished off a weekend sweep of Loyola Marymount on Sunday with a 9-1 victory over the Lions at Baylor Ballpark in Waco.

BU (12-3) benefitted from strong performances out of a couple newcomers. Freshman southpaw Carson Bailey turned in a strong outing in his first-career weekend start, going five innings with six strikeouts and allowing just one run on three hits. Redshirt sophomore infielder Travis Sanders collected his first multi-hit game as a Bear, picking up three knocks and an RBI in the win.

The veterans did their part too, as redshirt senior righty Cole Stasio turned in three strong innings of relief and each of the top four hitters in the Bears’ lineup drove in at least one run.

THE RUNDOWN
Baylor got on the board early thanks to an RBI double by redshirt senior designated hitter Hunter Simmons in the bottom of the first, then extended the lead in the second on redshirt sophomore infielder Jack Little’s bases-loaded walk. Little fought off eight pitches with two strikes and took his base on the 14th pitch of the at-bat, giving BU a 2-0 advantage.

Senior outfielders Enzo Apodaca and Wesley Jordan provided back-to-back RBIs to keep the line moving in the second inning, swelling the lead out to 4-0.

Bailey continued to mow down hitters through the first four frames, racking up six punchouts, before LMU struck in the fifth on an RBI groundout. The Bears answered right back in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs off an RBI single by Sanders and a wild pitch.

In the bottom of the sixth, BU added more insurance as Little blooped in a single to chase home a run and later came around to score on an error, pushing the lead to 8-1. The Bears kept piling on with another tally in the seventh thanks to senior infielder Hunter Teplanszky’s RBI groundout.

Freshman right-hander Brayden Bergman took the mound in the ninth for his collegiate debut and recorded two strikeouts in shutting the door and completing the weekend sweep, Baylor’s second of the season.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On his team’s pitching performance…
“Any time you only allow one run, that means you’re pitching the ball well. I thought arms were very good. I thought Carson Bailey was good, [Cole] Stasio was really good out of the bullpen, so you’ve got to like that. I’m a firm believer that he who has the bullpen wins. It’s the guys out there in the late innings that win games, and we have some guys who are talented and have got to get out there and throw.”

Redshirt Sophomore INF Travis Sanders
On his three-hit day…
“It felt great to be out there. Coach Thompson has always told me to stay humble and be ready to go, and I got the nod today. I was fortunate to be out there with great teammates and put on a show.”

Freshman LHP Carson Bailey
On making his first weekend start…
“It’s a dream to start a weekend game as a freshman. It’s pretty rare to do that so I’m thankful to have gotten the opportunity to come here and do that.”

WHAT’S NEXT
Baylor (12-3) looks for its fifth-straight win as Sam Houston (3-11) comes to Waco for a midweek matchup on Tuesday, March 11. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Baylor Ballpark.
