No. 9 Baylor EQ Runs Off Jackrabbits, Starts Strong Against Crookston
Bears defeat South Dakota State, begin meet with Golden Eagles

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The ninth-ranked Baylor equestrian team took the meet from South Dakota State, 14-5, to start the weekend up north.
The Bears (4-5, 2-3 Big 12) defeated the Jackrabbits (2-8, 2-3 ECAC) in the day’s first meet including a sweep of Flat before starting the first half of the meet with Minnesota Crookston, leading 6-1 with each event having only four riders going head-to-head instead of the usual five.
THE RUNDOWN – VS. SDSU
Starting off the meet in Fences, Madison Mitchell rode to an 83 on Charlie which her opposition fell short of with a 79, Mitchell earning Baylor’s first point of the day. Emma Covarrubias’ opponent scored a 65 on Joey which she overtook with an 82. Lauren Jorgensen had a gorgeous 88-point ride on Vita which the Jackrabbits met with a 68, BU taking the point and Jorgensen going on to earn the MOP. Juliette Earley rode against an SDSU 83 on Nora and followed it with a 55 score, the Jackrabbits taking the point. It was then Lauren Reid who scored an 86 on Mambo, her South Dakota State opponent coming up short with an 84. Headed into Reining, the Bears were up 4-1.
In Reining, the first ride was Riley Cachet’s opponent who scored a 66.5, which she then matched on Flicka; no point being awarded for the tie. Emily Moomaw had a 67.5-point ride on Poppy but was upended by the eventual MOP Lydia Loken with a 70.5 for the point. Bella Hehr came up with a 62 against a 68.5 on Patron for the Jackrabbits’ point. Sadie Peters had a 67.5 on Aggie which outdid her opponent’s 67 for a BU point. Kalena Reynolds faced a 69.5 on Lash, which she upended with a 70 to take the final point. The Bears and Jackrabbits tied the event, 2-2, and at the half, BU was up 6-3.
In Flat, Mitchell’s opponent scored a 79 on Mia which she easily overtook with an 84-point ride, earning her the MOP. Lauren Reid came out with an 80 on Harrison, her Jackrabbit opponent coming up short with a 79 for point BU. Caroline Robelen faced a 62 when she rode Leo and dashed it with her own 86-point score. Aboard Sweet Pea, Earley scored an 81 which the SDSU rider followed with a 70 for a Baylor point. Lauren Stebbins had a 66-point ride to beat and did just that with her own 67-point ride on Annie to complete the event sweep for the Bears, 5-0.
Up 11-3 heading into Horsemanship, Gianna Pozzi was the first ride in the arena and scored a 68 on Snoop, her opponent eventually outdoing with a 72.5 score for the point. Alexis Rutledge’s Jackrabbit opponent had a 60.5-point ride on Snaps which she took down with a 67.5 to earn the point. Anna Thron rode Marley to a 73-point score which her opposite rider couldn’t come up with, scoring a 71.5 and Thron earning the point and the MOP for Baylor. Taylor Smith faced a 71 on Ranger but scored a 67.5 to award the point to SDSU. Nadalee Vasquez rode to a 70 on Knight which was met with a 55, Vasquez taking the final point of the event and meet. Baylor took the event, 3-2, and won the meet, 14-5.
THE RUNDOWN – VS. UMNC
In Flat to start the meet with the Golden Eagles, Jorgensen’s opponent scored a 0 on Annie, which she met with an 86 for the point. Earley came out and scored an 84 on Sweet Pea, who she had coincidentally drew earlier, and her opponent couldn’t catch her, scoring a 71. Mitchell’s opponent scored a 58 on Vita which she turned around and rode to an 85-point ride for the Baylor point. Caroline Robelen rode to a 74-point score on Archie, her UMNC opponent scoring a 52 to complete the event sweep for the Bears at 4-0.
In Reining, Ryan Jensen’s opponent was in the arena first and scored a 64.5 on Gunner, which she upended with a 67 for the point. Reynolds’ turn, she rode to a 68.5-score on Jessie, but her Eagle adversary took the point with a one-point advantage at 69.5. Moomaw faced a 69 from her opponent on Flicka and scored a 69-point ride of her own for a no point decision. Peters had a 65-point ride on Chester which was followed by a 61.5 from her opponent, BU taking the point and the event at 2-1.
Stopping the meet at halftime to resume the next day, Baylor was up 6-1 against Crookston.
HIGHLIGHTS
* BU earned three out of four MOPs against the Jackrabbits with Lauren Jorgensen (Fences), Madison Mitchell (Flat) and Anna Thron (Horsemanship).
* Jorgensen had the highest point of the day with an 88 on Vita in Fences.
* Thron outscored all Western opponents with her 73-point ride on Marley in Horsemanship.
UP NEXT
The Bears continue the meet with Minnesota Crookston (0-9) on Saturday morning, beginning at 9:45 a.m. CT at DeHaan Equestrian Center.
They’ll compete in both Horsemanship and Fences to finalize the meet with the Golden Eagles.
