LOS CABOS, Mexico – Closing strong with four birdies in his last eight holes, Baylor freshman Vincent Stjernfeldt led the Bears in Monday’s Round 2 at the Cabo Collegiate with an even-par score of 71 at Twin Dolphin Club.

As a team, Baylor shot four strokes better than its opening-round score with an 11-over 295 and sits in 13th place with a 36-hole total of 26-over 594, one shot behind Rice and nine shots out of a spot in the top 10.

Arizona State and Oklahoma State remained 1-2 in the team standings at 555 (13-under) and 564 (4-under), respectively, going into Tuesday’s final round. Florida State’s Tyler Weaver shot the low score of the day at 5-under-par 66 and has the individual lead at 7-under 135, one shot ahead of ASU’s Michael Mjaaseth and OSU’s Preston Stout.

THE RUNDOWN

Stjernfeldt took a rather circuitous route to his even-par round of 71, going 3-over for his first 10 holes, with bogeys at Nos. 15, 18 and 4. Ten-over through the first 28 holes of the tournament, the freshman responded with birdies at Nos. 5 and 6, bogeyed No. 10 and then closed with back-to-back birdies at Nos. 11 and 12, moving up 15 spots to 49th in the individual standings.

After recording his team-high sixth birdie of the tournament at the par-5, 571-yard 13th hole, the junior made the turn at even par with a bogey at No. 15. But three bogeys on the front nine left him at 3-over for the day.

After opening par-birdie at Nos. 10 and 11, senior Zach Heffernan had a tough two-hole stretch with a double bogey on No. 14 and a triple bogey on the par-3 15th. He recovered to shoot even-par over his last 13 holes, bogeying the par-4 second hole and recording a birdie at No. 4 before closing with four-straight pars.

Overcoming a pair of double bogeys at Nos. 3 and 13, sophomore Davis Ovard offset bogeys at Nos. 7 and 11 with birdies at Nos. 6 and No. 17 to shoot 4-over 75 and finish tied for 62nd at 11-over 153.

Redshirt junior Drew Wrightson had a solid round going at 1-over through his first 15 holes, with birdies at Nos. 14 and 16. But he had a tough closing stretch with a triple bogey on the par-3 eighth hole and bogey at No. 10, shooting 6-over 77 for the day and tied for 56th at tied for 56th at 9-over 151.
