BROOKLYN, N.Y. – VJ Edgecombe was taken as the third pick in the first round of the NBA Draft on Wednesday night, becoming Baylor’s highest draft pick in program history.

Selected by the Philadelphia 76ers, Edgecombe became the fifth player from BU to earn a top-10 pick, the previous highest being Ekpe Udoh at No. 6 overall in 2010 by the Golden State Warriors. The Bears are the only program in the country with top-19 picks in each of the last five drafts.

With the second round still to be completed on Thursday, Baylor has 14 picks in the last 13 drafts, the most by any team in the State of Texas and the third-most in the Big 12 conference since 2012.

BU has had 15 NBA Draft picks in the Drew era – Ekpe Udoh (No. 6 in 2010), Perry Jones III (No. 28 in 2012), Quincy Acy (No. 37 in 2012), Quincy Miller (No. 38 in 2012), Pierre Jackson (No. 42 in 2014), Cory Jefferson (No. 60 in 2014), Taurean Prince (No. 12 in 2016), Davion Mitchell (No. 9 in 2021), Jared Butler (No. 40 in 2021), Jeremy Sochan (No. 9 in 2022), Kendall Brown (No. 48 in 2022), Keyonte George (No. 16 in 2023), Ja’Kobe Walter (No. 19 in 2024), Yves Missi (No. 21 in 2024) and now VJ Edgecomes (No. 3 in 2025).

The Baylor freshman standout now gives the Bears 12 first-round picks in program history and nine since 2010. The Bears now own 28 all-time draft picks.

Edgecombe becomes the second Baylor player drafted by Philadelphia, joining Pierre Jackson in 2013. Former Baylor All-American Jared Butler played this past season with the Sixers, averaging 9.0 points and 3.7 assists in 60 games with a club option to return next season.

The NBA Draft continues Thursday night at 7 p.m. CT on ESPN, with draft-eligible Bears Norchad Omier, Jeremy Roach and Jayden Nunn hoping to hear their names called.
