ESSEN, Germany – After a week of competition and six games played, Team USA, represented by Baylor men’s basketball, ended the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games as silver medalists after dropping a heartbreaker in overtime to Team Brazil, 94-88.

Team USA held a lead as high as 20 points in the third quarter but couldn’t hold its momentum from Team Brazil’s physical game play and fiery offense, scoring 35 points in the fourth to force overtime and take the gold.

Wyoming-transfer guard, Obi Agbim, put up big numbers for USA with a tournament-high of 30 points, 11 rebounds, three steals and two assists. Cameron Carr also contributed heavily with 26 points.

THE RUNDOWN

Both teams began their final game in Germany on a slower pace, both shooting under 35-percent in the first ten minutes. Isaac Williams IV drove through the paint with a layup to put USA on the board, with Dan Skillings Jr. right behind to give USA its first lead of the night. However, Brazil remained close throughout the first quarter and maintained some momentum in the final two minutes, pocketing eight points to take the lead with a corner three, 20-17, at the end of the first.

Agbim came out the gate in the second quarter with some fire, snagging 12 consecutive points on five shots made, two being from behind the arc, in just three minutes to give USA a 31-26 lead at the midway point. Carr secured a four-point play with an and-one outside of the three-point line and followed up with a step-back jumper to give USA a 14-point advantage. At the half, Team USA outscored Team Brazil 26-9 in the second, with the help of Agbim (19pts) and Carr (10pts), to go up 43-29 heading in the final 20 minutes.

A fan-favorite one-handed dunk, jumper in the paint and a lob up-top in a trio of sequences for Carr gave USA an even bigger boost out of the half, sending USA on a 11-0 run. Team USA kept its foot on the gas, on both ends of the court, holding Team Brazil under 10 points until the last three minutes of the quarter.

Agbim’s third three of the night came under contested defense to send him past the 20-point mark for the fourth time out of six games. Carr kept hammering with another impressive dunk to move him plus 20 points. After a highlight show from Agbim and Carr in the third, USA went into the final 10 minutes with a 67-45 lead.

Skillings hit double-figures in the fourth quarter, going six-for-six in the tournament with over 10 points in each game.

Brazil rallied in the fourth to cut USA’s lead to under 10 at the three minute mark, going on a 21-9 run. Overall, Brazil put up a whopping 35 points in the fourth on USA’s defense. In the final minute of the game, Brazil only trailed by three points. A clutch bucket from Agmin to give him 30 on the night gave Brazil the ball back with nine seconds on the clock, with USA leading 80-77. A nailed triple from Brazil put the game tied 80-all and sent the final championship game into overtime.

Brazil came into OT on a tear, taking the lead for the first time since the second quarter and going up 86-80. A pull-up three by JJ White cut Brazil’s lead to three but it wasn’t enough for Team USA to come back, finishing as silver medalists 94-88.
