No. 27 Baylor WGOLF Finishes Sixth at the Match in The Desert

SUPERSTITION MOUNTAIN, Ariz. —Baylor women's golf started the spring season with a sixth-place finish at the Match in the Desert on Monday on the heels of a 15-over 303.

The Bears were led by Silje Ohma and her even-par 72, which earned her a tie for fifth, the fifth top-5 finish of her career. Bridget Boczar and Malena Castro put together solid showings, tying for 20th with a pair for 2-over 74s.

No. 24 Kansas took home the tournament title with a 2-over 290, while No. 7 Arizona State came up just three shots short, in second place. Baylor’s 15-over 303 was three shots behind fifth-place San Jose State and two shots ahead of seventh-place Eastern Michigan. KU’s Lily Hirst captured individual medalist honors with a 3-under 69.

THE RUNDOWN
Ohma made three bogeys in her first five holes but recovered nicely with a birdie at No. 6 to make the turn at 2-over 38. The junior kept things rolling with a bogey-free back nine, highlighted by birdies at Nos. 13 and 17.

Boczar carded the team’s first birdie at No. 5 but dropped three shots on her final two holes of the front nine. She dropped two more shots with bogeys at Nos. 10 and 12 before playing her final six holes at even par.

Castro played her first 11 holes at 6-over before recovering to play her final seven holes at 2-under, thanks to birdies at Nos. 13 and 18.

BaiMai Seema went out with an 8-over 44 on the front nine, only to flip the script on the back nine, beginning with a birdie at No. 10. She added two more birdies at Nos. 15 and 18 around bogeys at Nos. 13 and 16 to finish tied for 33rd.

Ashleen Kaur had a run of bogeys on holes 5, 6, 7 and 8, which were bookended by two double bogeys on holes 4 and 9. After a birdie at No. 10, she finished the round with another pair of doubles on holes 15 and 16 en route to an 11-over 83, landing her to tie for 42 place.

Playing as an individual, Jenny Lee started the day off with a string of six bogeys on the front nine. The freshman recovered to go bogey-free on the back nine with a birdie at No. 15.

  *   Malena Castro and Bridget Boczar tied for the third-best par-5 scoring average (4.50)
  *   Baylor’s 49 pars tied for the third most in the field
