WACO, Texas – Baylor men’s golf coach Mike McGraw announced the addition of Ryan Murphy to the coaching staff on Monday.
The coaching veteran spent 10 years as the head coach at the University of Texas, restoring the women’s program to national prominence after six years as an assistant for John Fields and the Texas men’s program. Baylor head coach Mike McGraw jumped at the opportunity to add a coach of Murphy’s caliber to his staff.
"We are thrilled that Ryan will join our staff,” he said. “His experience and expertise will benefit our players greatly, while Coach [Jeremy] Alcorn and I are also looking forward to learning from Ryan. This is a big move for our program."
The 2022 Big 12 Women's Golf Coach of the Year helped Texas to five Big 12 titles in his 10 seasons at the helm, highlighted by three-straight from 2017-19. Under his direction, the Longhorns made the NCAA Championships in eight of his nine opportunities on the 40 Acres, including a match-play appearance and a tie for fifth in 2019.
In total, Murphy’s Texas teams made the top-15 cut seven times in eight championship appearances, qualifying for the top-8 match play in three of his final five appearances at NCAA’s with the women’s squad.
Prior to helming the women's program, Murphy was an assistant with the men's program from 2008-2014, helping them win its first national title in 40 years in 2012. He recruited and developed the talents of All-Americans like Jordan Spieth, Dylan Frittelli, Cody Gribble, Beau Hossler and Julio Vegas. In those six years, the Longhorns recorded 19 team titles.
Murphy was named the 2013 Jan Strickland Assistant Coach of the Year, recognizing the top assistant coach in college golf.
His first head-coaching job came in 2005 when he helmed the St. Edwards Hilltoppers for three seasons. Murphy led them to the brink of a national title in 2008 when they finished tied for first before falling in a three-team playoff at Memorial Park Golf Course in Houston.
He began his career as an assistant coach at his alma mater, New Mexico, from 2001-05. While in Albuquerque, he helped the Lobos to three-straight Mountain West Titles and a fifth-place finish at the 2005 NCAA Championship.
Murphy, McGraw and Alcorn will get their guys back in action Feb. 17-19, at the Prestige in Palm Spring, Calif.
