ARLINGTON, Texas – Baylor baseball battled No. 8 Oregon State to a one-run ballgame Friday night at Globe Life Field in Arlington, but ultimately dropped a 4-3 contest.

The Bears came within inches of tying the game, as freshman infielder Pearson Riebock’s would-be solo home run was robbed at the wall by OSU’s right fielder.

BU’s bullpen tandem of junior righty Grayson Murry and senior right-hander Will Glatch backed up lefty starter Ethan Calder with 2.2 scoreless innings of relief after Calder competed through 5.1 frames, allowing four runs on four hits and one walk with four strikeouts.

Senior outfielder Wesley Jordan launched his second home run of the season, a two-run blast that traveled 445 feet, and redshirt sophomore infielder Jack Little delivered an RBI single to account for the Baylor tallies.

THE RUNDOWN
Oregon State opened the scoring with a two-run single in the bottom of the first after three of the first four batters reached base. However, Calder settled in from there and retired each of the next nine he faced.

Meanwhile, the Bears’ bats were held quiet the first trip through the lineup, as OSU starter Nelson Keljo faced the minimum through three innings, allowing just one walk to junior catcher Cortlan Castle who was promptly erased on a double play ball.

In the fourth, redshirt senior outfielder Enzo Apodaca got things going with a single before Jordan demolished a 1-1 pitch to the second deck in left field, tying the score at 2-2.

The Beavers would answer in the bottom half with a solo home run, going back in front at 3-2, but again Calder retired the next six before a one-out double chased him from the mound in the sixth.

After Murry came on with BU trailing by a run, OSU added to its lead in the sixth with an RBI single that made it 4-2.

In the top of the seventh, Riebock led off the inning and crushed the first pitch he saw, nearly pulling the Bears back within a run, but the Beavers’ right fielder brought the would-be home run back from over the wall for the first out of the frame. With two away, senior infielder Tyriq Kemp reached on an error and came around to score on an RBI knock from Little, cutting the deficit to 4-3.

That’s where things would stay, as neither side could get a baserunner aboard in the later stages. Calder was tagged with the loss, while OSU’s Eric Segura earned the win after tossing three innings of relief, allowing one unearned run on one hit and three walks. Matthew Morrell picked up the save after his two scoreless frames finished off the Bears.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On his team’s effort…
“The game was a little fast early, but Ethan [Calder] really settled in and pitched well. That’s a top-10 team in the country with big, physical, strong dudes and if you make a mistake, they can hurt you. I thought we played well, I thought we pitched well, and I thought we competed really well at the plate. They’re a really good ballclub, they play the game really sound and really well. I thought it was a good college baseball game.”

Senior OF Wesley Jordan
On coming back from down 2-0…
“They’re a good team. We knew we’d get punched, but we were able to punch back. We’re not going to quit. We get 27 outs and we’re going to take every single one of them. You’ve got to get us out. They’re a great team. Not the result we wanted, but we’re going to learn from it and grow.”

WHAT’S NEXT
Baylor (7-2) returns to Globe Life Field to face Ohio State (1-6) on Saturday, March 1. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
