WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball took care of Stephen F. Austin Tuesday night at Baylor Ballpark by a final of 9-4 to improve to 7-1 on the season.
BU’s three senior outfielders combined to drive in six of the Bears’ nine runs, helping the team to its fourth 7-1 start to the year since 1995.
The outfield trio of Enzo Apodaca, Wesley Jordan and Ty Johnson combined for five hits and six RBIs, while fifth-year senior designated hitter Hunter Simmons, fifth-year senior infielder Will Pendergrass and senior infielder Tyriq Kemp each also drove in runs.
Freshman left-handed pitcher Carson Bailey was impressive on the bump, striking out seven batters and walking none in five innings. His lone blemish came in the top of the fourth when the Lumberjacks put up four runs, all of which were unearned.
THE RUNDOWN
Baylor’s veteran outfielders got the scoring started early, as Apodaca doubled in a run and then scored on Jordan’s single in the first inning. BU added another in the third as Kemp’s sacrifice fly made it 3-0.
After Bailey retired nine of the first 11 batters he faced with three strikeouts, the ‘Jacks capitalized on a pair of Baylor errors and scored four unearned runs in the fourth inning to go ahead, 4-3.
Bailey bounced back in the fifth, striking out the side in order to finish his day with seven punchouts across his five frames. Junior right-hander Grayson Murry followed suit with two scoreless innings of relief and went on to earn his first-career win.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Bears responded with a big inning as four runs crossed the plate on RBI knocks from Jordan, Simmons and a two-run double by Johnson, taking back the lead at 7-4.
Redshirt sophomore lefty Caleb Jameson came on in the eighth and retired the side in order before BU cushioned its lead with a pair of runs in the bottom half. After a double play ball ended Jameson’s outing, fifth-year senior righty Drew Leach came out to record the final out of the ballgame.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On the 7-1 start and the upcoming schedule…
“I’m excited. I think the guys are building and gaining confidence every day. I’m excited for us to go up there and compete at Globe Life [Field]. It’s going to be a good environment against really good competition, and we’re ready to step up and see what we’ve got.”
Senior OF Wesley Jordan
On the team’s start and the upcoming trip to Arlington…
“I mean, 7-1 is great but we have a lot left. We’re focused on improving every day and becoming a better team. I think this weekend will be a great opportunity to show it.”
Junior RHP Grayson Murry
On his confidence in the team’s offense…
“Our guys can hit, man. Seeing them just day in and day out mash baseballs, our whole lineup can put runs up, and our job as pitchers is to go out and put up zeros.”
WHAT’S NEXT
