IRVING, Texas – Baylor baseball junior left-handed pitcher Ethan Calder has been named a Big 12 Co-Pitcher of the Week, as announced Tuesday afternoon by the conference office.

Calder was outstanding as Baylor’s Opening Day starter on Friday, going five innings and allowing just one run on two hits and one walk, while striking out a career-high 13 batters. Of the 18 batters he faced, only one advanced past first base, a solo home run that was the only blemish on a day where 13 of the 15 outs Calder recorded came via the punchout.

Calder’s 13 strikeouts were the most by a Bear on Opening Day since at least 2003, as he became just the fourth player in the last 22 years to reach double-digit punchouts in a season opener. His performance also marked the most strikeouts by a Bear since 2011, when Logan Verrett fanned 14 in a complete-game shutout against Louisiana Tech.

Additionally, Calder was the only Power-4 pitcher to strike out at least 13 batters in his first start of 2025, and one of three pitchers total in the nation to eclipse that mark.

“The reason that we gave him the ball is because he’s consistent with everything he does,” said head coach Mitch Thompson. “We knew what we were going to get, and he went out and did it. It was great to see. Ethan was fantastic.”

This is Baylor’s fifth weekly conference award under Thompson and BU’s 45th Big 12 Pitcher of the Week accolade all-time.

Calder is joined by Utah’s Colter McAnelly as this week’s Big 12 Co-Pitchers of the Week. Arizona State’s Brandon Compton was named Player of the Week, while TCU’s Cole Cramer garnered Newcomer of the Week honors.
