PALM SPRINGS, Calif. — Baylor men’s golf will open its spring season on Monday, teeing it up at the Prestige on the Norman course at PGA West.
The Bears are one of 24 teams in the field and one of six Big 12 squads in the team event, while six Bears will compete in the Prestige Individual Invite, played concurrently on the nearby Terra Lago course. Head coach Mike McGraw loves the work his guys put in over the winter break, and he looks forward to seeing the fruits of that labor in the desert.
“We didn't have the fall we wanted,” he said. “We finished pretty well at the Big 12 Match Play championship, but we didn't play well overall. Part of that was just needing better attention to detail and working on their bodies a lot more. I think they have done that this offseason, so I love the team we've got going out there. I think we're going to be really competitive, and if the lead-up to it is any indication, we should have a great week.”
Junior Jonas Appel will lead off this spring in the No. 1 spot. The last time we saw Appel, he tied for fifth at the Clerico, his career-best finish.
Senior Zach Heffernan will look to close out his BU career with a strong showing this semester and will play at No. 2 this week. The Prestige will be the fifth event he has played out of the top-three position this season.
Freshman Vincent Stjernfeldt will take the No. 3 position. Qualifying for the lineup in each of the last three events, the big Swede announced his presence with authority, boasting a 3-1-1 mark in his debut at the Big 12 Match Play in October.
Drew Wrightson will play at No. 4 this week. The redshirt junior had a great showing in Palm Springs in 2023, tying his career-best finish with a tie for fifth.
Davis Ovard will play out of the fifth and final spot in the lineup this week. The sophomore ended the fall on a high note, finishing tied for 11th as an individual at the DBU Classic.
Aidan Gutierrez, Jackson Hymer, Martin Kemp, Sam Dossey, Patricio Gonzalez and Corbin Null will compete in the individual event. Live stats and scoring can be found at Scoreboard.Clippd.com.<https://scoreboard.clippd.com/tournaments/233282/scoring/participants>
