No. 10 Baylor EQ Dominates South Dakota State to Kickoff Spring
Bears earned their first event sweep of the year against the Jackrabbits

WACO, Texas – The 10th-ranked Baylor Equestrian team beat South Dakota State in Waco at the Willis Family Equestrian Center on Saturday, 14-3.
The Bears (2-4, 1-2 Big 12) dominated the Jackrabbits (2-6, 2-3 ECAC), sweeping them in Flat and winning 4-1 in both Fences and Horsemanship before tying 1-1 in Reining.
THE RUNDOWN
Starting off the meet in Fences, Emma Covarrubias scored a 76 to kick off the rides but was upended by SDSU’s 80 in the second half. Lauren Jorgensen went up against an 82 and responded with an 88 on Donny, scoring the first and ultimately highest point for the Bears, going on to get the MOP. Baylor went on a scoring run from there as Madison Mitchell and Lauren Reid both scored a 76 and Juliette Earley scored an 82 on Teddy to close out the event. The Bears took the event 4-1 heading into the bulk of the meet.
In Flat, the Bears dominated the Jackrabbits. Lauren Stebbins scored a 77 to SDSU’s 69, with the point going to the Bears. Mitchell scored a 78 against SDSU’s 66, Baylor’s point, and was eventually named MOP for the event. Lauren Reid scored a 76 on Vino to beat SDSU’s 71 and Grace O’Connell scored a 73 to beat the Jackrabbits’ 67. Juliette Earley closed out strong for the Bears, scoring a 70 against SDSU’s 66. The event resulted in a 5-0 sweep for the Bears, earning their first sweep of the year in any event.
To start Horsemanship, Anna Thron scored a 74 against SDSU’s 72.5, with the point going to the Bears. Alexis Rutledge scored a 74.5, facing off a Jackrabbit 72.5 to earn the point for BU. Gianna Pozzi fell to the Jackrabbits, 74.5-61.5. Taylor Smith earned another point for the Bears in her matchup against SDSU, scoring a 76 to the Jackrabbits’ 72, eventually named the MOP. To close out Horsemanship, Nadalee Vasquez scored a 75.5 over SDSU’s 72, earning another point for the Bears. Overall, Baylor took the event, 4-1.
In Reining, Isabella Hehr came out first for the Bears but lost her matchup by a half point, scoring a 70.5 to SDSU’s 71. Sadie Peters went up against a 67 and earned her point for the Bears, scoring a 70.5. The final three matchups all resulted in ties, with Emily Moomaw and SDSU’s rider both scoring a 69.5, Kalena Reynolds and SDSU both scoring a 68.5, and Riley Cachat and her Jackrabbit opponent both scoring a 69. The event ended in a 1-1 tie with South Dakota State’s Lydia Loken earning the MOP with the 71.

The Bears saddle up next against Fresno State on February 7 in Fresno, California. Baylor will be back in Waco on February 15 against Oklahoma State for a conference meet.
