FORT WORTH, Texas – No. 13 Baylor women’s basketball couldn’t recover from an early surge and fell 89-54 to No. 2 Texas on Sunday afternoon at Dickies Arena.
The Bears (10-2) briefly held a 9-4 lead midway through the first quarter, but Texas (12-0) answered with a 16-0 run and took control for good. Baylor trailed 29-13 after one quarter and went into halftime down 45-27, despite limiting Texas to 16 points in the second period.
Darianna Littlepage-Buggs led the Bears with 14 rebounds and six points in 33 minutes, accounting for nearly half of the Bears’ 33 total rebounds. Taliah Scott paced Baylor in scoring with nine points, going 4-for-4 at the free-throw line before exiting the game, while Jana Van Gytenbeek added six points and a team-high seven assists. Yuting Deng provided a spark off the bench with nine points on 3-of-6 shooting, including a pair of 3-pointers.
Baylor shot 39.1% from the field (18-of-46) and 37.5% from three-point range (6-of-16), but turned the ball over 30 times, giving Texas 42 points off turnovers. The Longhorns also finished with a 48-20 advantage in points in the paint.
The Bears continued after halftime, shooting 50% in the third quarter and 40% in the fourth, but Texas pushed the margin to as many as 38 points late.
BU is back home at Foster Pavilion on Thursday night to host Southern in one final non-conference tune-up. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. on ESPN+ and the Baylor Sports Media Network.
