WACO, Texas – Baylor opened with its highest scoring quarter of the season and closed with its first 60 percent shooting performance of the Nicki Collen era in a 112-47 win over Southeastern Louisiana on Wednesday night at Foster Pavilion.
BU won the opening tip for the seventh time this season and remained unbeaten when doing so. Darianna Littlepage-Buggs scored the game’s first points with a layup before Southeastern Louisiana answered on the next possession. Taliah Scott added an and-one on Baylor’s second trip and Bella Fontleroy hit the first three-pointer of the game. Baylor’s first four baskets came from four different players and all five starters scored within the first five minutes.
The Bears led 12-2 with 3:20 left in the first quarter before producing a 32-0 run, their longest of the season, surpassing the previous high mark of 19 consecutive against Le Moyne. Baylor went 10-for-10 from the field during that stretch with six players scoring. The Bears ended the first quarter shooting 88.2 percent, their highest of the season, and led 36-7.
Southeastern Louisiana scored the first points of the second quarter before Marcayla Johnson answered with Baylor’s first basket of the period. Yuting Deng made her first three-pointer at the 7:45 mark during a 7-0 Baylor run over 1:23. Scott opened the game 7-for-7 from the field and stayed perfect well into the quarter. Eight of nine active Baylor players scored in the first half as the Bears took a 65-20 lead into the break, their first 60-point first half since Feb. 22, 2020, against Oklahoma.
Fontleroy opened the second half with a three-pointer as both teams opened 3-for-3 from the field, but Baylor quickly took full control again. Jana Van Gytenbeek reached double-digit assists for the first time since Nov. 24, 2023, and finished the third quarter with 11. Also coming in the third stanza, Scott added her first block of the season and secured her eighth 20-point game of the year while Littlepage-Buggs recorded her fourth double-double of the season and Marcayla Johnson made her first career three-pointer. Baylor held a 90-30 lead entering the fourth.
Kayla Nelms scored the first points of the fourth quarter for the Bears before Scott scored her first career double-double off 23 points and 10 assists.
Six Baylor players reached double figures, Scott, Buggs, Fontleroy, Deng, Marcayla Johnson, and Kiersten Johnson, and all ten active players recorded points. Deng finished with a season-high three three-pointers and Fontleroy added her third 20-point game of the year. Van Gytenbeek closed the night with 12 assists, matching her career high set versus McNeese in 2023.
Baylor finished the game shooting 63.5 percent from the field, its highest mark under Collen, and reached 100 points for the fifth time in her tenure. The Bears improved to 8-1 while Southeastern Louisiana moved to 2-4.
BU returns to Foster Pavilion on Sunday afternoon to host UTSA. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. on ESPN+ and the Baylor Sports Media Network, and tickets are available through the Baylor athletics ticket office.
