No. 20 Baylor VB Set for Season Opener Against South Alabama

WACO, Texas – No. 20 Baylor Volleyball opens its 2025 campaign against South Alabama on Friday afternoon at 2:30 p.m., the first of three matches slated for this weekend at the LSU Tournament in Baton Rouge, La.

The Bears and Jaguars meet for the third time, with BU holding a 2-0 advantage in the all-time series. With two scrimmages in the books this fall, head coach Ryan McGuyre is excited to see his team embark on its journey through the 2025 season.

“I have absolutely loved this team from day one,” McGuyre said. “I think they worked extremely hard last spring and definitely this summer. We have a lot of young athletes on this team, but we have some veterans as well, and I just love their starting point. I still think what we're going to look like in November and December is going to be much improved from where we are now, just because this team has great speed of learning, great work ethic and a remarkable love for each other, so I’m excited that we get to go play somebody else.”

After hosting the most home matches in program history last season, the Bears will play seven of the first 10 contests on the road this season.

The Bears boast seven newcomers, including DI transfers Gabbi Essix (Florida), Anastasiia Nikolnikova (Syracuse) and MJ McCurdy (Texas State). Among the 11 returners, BU brings back 68% of its blocks, 32% of its aces served and 33% of its digs and kills from the 2024 squad.
