Baylor MGOLF Settles into 14th place at the Big 12 Championship

TULSA, Okla. — Baylor men’s golf finished Wednesday in 14th place with a 58-over 898 at the Big 12 Championship at Southern Hills.

The Bears were led by Jonas Appel's 2-over 72, 1.3 shots under the stroke average in the third round. Davis Ovard continued to lead the Bears in the overall standings, tied for 26th after 54 holes. Connor Williams and Jose Ballester of Arizona State share the individual lead with Houston’s Wolfgang Glawe with 1-under 209s.

Baylor trails 13th-place West Virginia by six shots while having a two-shot cushion over UCF and a three-shot advantage over Iowa State. After a second straight under-par round, Oklahoma State surged to the top of the leaderboard with a 1-over 841, six strokes in front of second-place Arizona State.

THE RUNDOWN
Starting on No. 10, Appel made a quick bogey but erased it with a birdie at No. 13, turning in 1-over after a bogey at No. 18. Two more bogeys on his second nine dotted the card at Nos. 3 and 7 before closing with a birdie at No. 9, which is playing as the fourth-hardest hole this week.

Zach Heffernan got off to a solid start with seven pars in his round but ran into a spot of bother playing Nos. 17 and 18 at 3-over. Back-to-back pars began his second nine before a second bogey at No. 3. His first birdie of the day came at No. 5, where he made a bogey in each of the first two rounds before one final bogey befell him at No. 8 to finish the day tied for 55th.

Vincent Stjernfeldt turned in his best round of the week with a 5-over 75 on Wednesday. A bogey at No. 12 and a birdie at No. 13 put him at even through his first five holes before closing the outward half with bogeys at Nos. 15 and 16. A second bogey of the round came at No. 1 to get back to 1-over before dropping four strokes with double bogeys at Nos. 5 and 7.

Ovard is tied for 26th after 54 holes. The sophomore stumbled out of the gate with back-to-back bogeys at Nos. 10 and 11 but recovered nicely with a birdie at No. 13 to turn at 1-over. He made four straight bogeys to open his inward nine before getting a stroke back with a birdie at No. 7. He finished with back-to-back bogeys at Nos. 8 and 9.

Drew Wrightson shot a 12-over 82 to drop into a tie for 71st. He made five bogeys at Nos. 11, 12, 14, 15 and 17 to turn in 40. He made his final three pars of the day at Nos. 1, 2 and 3, followed by bogeys at Nos. 4, 5, 7, 8 and 9 around a double bogey at No. 6.

HIGHLIGHTS

  *   Jonas Appel has improved his score in each of his four-career Big 12 Championship rounds in each round.
  *   Appel made a birdie at No. 9, one of just 20 at that hole in 239 rounds.
