WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball dropped its midweek matchup to Texas State on Tuesday night, 6-2, at Baylor Ballpark in Waco.
The Bears (21-11) struggled to find offense throughout the night, scoring just two runs on six hits in the loss to the Bobcats (16-16). Redshirt senior designated hitter Hunter Simmons provided an RBI single in the ninth as part of his 14th multi-hit performance of the year and BU plated its other run on a wild pitch.
Texas State’s starting pitcher Austin Eaton hurled four scoreless frames and picked up his second win of the year, though five Bears turned in scoreless outings of their own. BU sophomore southpaw Mason Green made his season-debut with a scoreless first inning and picked up three punchouts, while redshirt senior righty Cole Stasio threw two scoreless frames and fanned four.
Senior infielder and right-handed pitcher Hunter Teplanszky made his pitching debut for the Bears and struck out two in a scoreless inning of work, his second-career appearance on the mound, helping Baylor to 13 strikeouts on the night, the team’s second-most in a game this season.
THE RUNDOWN
Though the first two Bobcats reached base against Green, the lefty settled in nicely and fanned the next three batters he faced to get out of early trouble in his season debut.
Texas State broke through in the top of the second, scoring one on an RBI single, and added another in the third on another RBI knock to take an early 2-0 lead.
Stasio entered to get the final out of the third via one of his four strikeouts and continued his strong relief outing into the fifth, tying a career high in punchouts.
The Bobcats added to their advantage in the sixth, plating three runs on four hits and a Baylor error to move ahead, 5-0.
Teplanszky came on in the eighth to make his pitching debut in the green and gold, tossing a scoreless frame with two punchouts to keep the Bears within striking distance.
Texas State extended its lead to 6-0 in the eighth on a solo home run before BU was able to cut into the lead in the bottom of the ninth as Simmons singled in a run ahead of a wild pitch that plated another. That would be all for the Bears as TXST’s Matthew Tippie finished off a three-inning save with two of his six strikeouts on the night.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On tonight’s performance…
“Well, we didn’t swing the bats. I mean, we really haven’t swung the bats well in the five games we played here this week, and that’s frustrating and disappointing. We have to get back to having a little mojo at the plate and a little swagger at the plate, because you’re going to have to score to win. Tonight’s game isn’t about the pitchers not doing their job. We didn’t play very good defense, and if you don’t play defense and you don’t score, you’re not going to win.”
WHAT’S NEXT
Baylor (21-11, 5-7) hits the road for a weekend series at Texas Tech (9-20, 5-7) in Lubbock, beginning Friday, April 12, at 6:30 p.m. at Rip Griffin Park.
