CARROLLTON, Texas — Baylor men’s golf shot the fourth-best round of the day at a windy Maridoe Golf Club to finish sixth at the Maridoe Collegiate on Tuesday.
BU’s Jonas Appel closed with back-to-back birdies to lead the team in the final round for the second-straight event. His tie for 17th led the team, while Davis Ovard strung together the second-best tournament finishing tied for 29th. Oklahoma’s Jase Summy won individual medalist honors with a 6-under 210, beating his teammate Ryder Cowan by two shots. Only four players finished in red figures after 54 holes.
With the stroke average hovering above 77, up more than two strokes from Monday’s rounds, the Bears shot a 13-over 301 to move up one spot from the second round. The No. 7 Sooners ran away with the team title, shooting a 7-under 857, besting second-place No. 4 Oklahoma State and its 10-over 874.
THE RUNDOWN
Starting on No. 9, Appel jumped into red figures quickly with a birdie at No. 10. A double bogey at No. 12 and a bogey at No. 15 dropped him back over par. He fell to 3-over with a bogey at No. 4 but closed with back-to-back birdies at Nos. 6 and 7 to climb 17 spots on the final day.
Davis Ovard held his ground in the final round and tied for 29th on the heels of a 5-over 77. Following a bogey on his second hole of the day at No. 9, he settled in with five straight pars. Four bogeys in his next six holes would cost him three shots as his first birdie of the day came in that stretch as well at No. 17. He added another birdie at No. 6 but finished with a double bogey at No. 7.
Zach Heffernan shot his highest round of the season, an 11-over 83, to fall into a tie for 42nd on Tuesday. The senior played his first 13 holes at 11-over with nine bogeys and a double. He played his final five holes at even par, though, with a birdie at No. 2 and a bogey at No. 3. Tuesday's round was the first time in 21 rounds this season Heffernan did not card a counting score.
Drew Wrightson beat the stroke average by a shot to climb 13 spots into a tie for 42nd with Heffernan. Four over through four holes to start the round, the junior played his next six holes at 2-under thanks to birdies at Nos. 13, 16 and 17. Three more bogeys dotted his inward half at Nos. 1, 4 and 5 before he closed with a birdie at No. 6 to polish off his 76.
Jackson Hymer turned in Baylor’s second-best score on Tuesday with a 3-over 75 to finish tied for 57th. Starting on No. 10, the freshman played his outward nine at 3-over with bogeys at Nos. 11, 15 and 18. The San Antonio, Texas, native settled in at the turn and played his inward half at even par as a bogey at No. 1 preceded his first birdie of the day at No. 5.
Sam Dossey finished tied for 42nd, which tied for fourth among the individual competitors.
