Bears win first match of Baylor Invitational

WACO, Texas – The 18th-ranked Baylor volleyball team secured the victory over LSU on Thursday night at the Ferrell Center to snap a two-match loss streak, 3-1.

The Bears (6-2) handed the Tigers (5-2) the loss in four sets. Winning the first set 25-16, LSU took the second set 25-23. Baylor snuck away with the third set, 25-21, and finished the fourth 30-38 to add another win to its record.

The last time the teams faced one another was the 2018 Baylor Invitational, where the Bears also won 3-1.

THE RUNDOWN

Set 1
The Bears came out strong with an early block from Allie Sczech and Alicia Andrew, quickly taking a 4-0 lead. The momentum continued with another block, this time a solo by Andrew, extending the Bears' lead to 6-0. With a rally at hand, a powerful kill from Andrew put the Bears ahead 8-3. A dump by Jackie Barrett Frazier increased the lead to 12-5, forcing LSU to call a timeout. The Tigers responded, closing the gap to 16-9, but a kill at the net by Barrett Frazier helped BU regain control. An ace by Elise McGhee made it 19-10, prompting another timeout from the Tigers. Despite LSU's fight with a kill to make it 23-14, the set ended with another kill from Barrett Frazier, closing it for the Bears at 25-16.

Set 2
With a set win under their belt, the Bears started the second strong, jumping to a 3-0 lead. LSU pushed back to close the gap at 3-2, but a kill from Andrew kept the Bears in control. Kendal Murphy and McGhee added kills, extending the lead to 9-5. A block by Barrett Frazier and Bibinbe kept Baylor ahead, 10-5. LSU fought to close the deficit to 13-10, but a kill by McGhee maintained the Bears' edge. Murphy’s kill brought Baylor to 15-10, prompting an LSU timeout. After a hard-fought rally, the Bears claimed another point, leading 16-11. LSU closed in again at 16-15, forcing Baylor to call a timeout. LSU briefly took the lead at 17-16, but Baylor tied it with a Murphy kill. After a challenged play, Baylor went ahead 19-17. A block from McGhee and Bibinbe kept the Bears up 21-20 in a back-and-forth battle. Tied at 22-22, Andrew’s kill gave Baylor a narrow lead, but LSU surged ahead 24-23, prompting another Baylor timeout. LSU closed out the set, winning 25-23.

Set 3
Entering the third set tied at 3-3, a kill by Murphy gave the Bears the lead. A kill by Bibinbe increased Baylor's advantage to 7-4. McGhee followed with another kill, pushing the Bears ahead 10-7. LSU responded with a kill to close in, but Baylor remained in front, 12-10. The Bears maintained control with a block by Bibinbe and Barrett Frazier, increasing the lead to 15-11. A solo block from Andrew kept the Bears ahead at 18-15, prompting an LSU timeout. A powerful block by Grace Carroll and Bibinbe, followed by a kill from Carroll, added two more points for Baylor, forcing another timeout by LSU. The set concluded with a kill by McGhee, sealing it at 25-21 for the Bears.

Set 4
After winning the third set, the Bears faced a strong start from LSU, who took an early 4-2 lead. Despite LSU maintaining the advantage, BU fought back with a dump from Barrett Frazier, lessening the deficit to 7-6. The Bears tied it 10-10 with a kill by McGhee, then pulled ahead with a block from Carroll. After a 12-12 tie, two kills by Murphy gave the Bears a 14-12 edge. An ace by Bibinbe kept Baylor in the lead at 17-15. With the score tied at 18-18, LSU regained momentum with a kill, forcing a Baylor timeout. A kill by Andrew tied it 20-20. Following an intense rally, LSU led 23-22, but Baylor tied it again at 23-23. LSU earned the set point at 24-23, but an ace from BU put them ahead 25-24. The teams exchanged points, tying at 26-26, before the Bears claimed match point at 27-26. LSU evened it at 27-27, but Baylor secured the final point with a kill from Murphy, winning the set, 30-28.
