GRAND HAVEN, Mich. — Baylor women’s golf got the 2024-25 season off to a good start with a tie for fourth at the Folds of Honor Collegiate on Wednesday.

BU’s performance this week marks its highest finish in a season-opening event since carding a second-place at the Cougar Classic in 2021. With a 2-under 70 in the final round, BaiMai Seema shot one of the nine best rounds of the day to tie for 11th. Ashleen Kaur led the Bears with a tie for sixth, making BU one of just five schools with multiple players in the top-11.

Former BU women’s golfer Giovana Maymon led her Arizona Wildcats to victory in her first tournament as the head coach with a 4-over 868. The Bears finished tied with Texas and Michigan State with 19-over 883s.

THE RUNDOWN
Kaur shot an even-par 72 to record her second top-10 finish in her last three events. After a bogey at No. 6 and a birdie at No. 8, the sophomore made the turn at even par. Kaur dropped three strokes over her next two holes with a double-bogey at No. 10 and a bogey at No. 11. Three-over through 11 holes, the Houston native, closed strong with birdies at Nos. 13, 15 and 17 to get back to even for the day.

One of nine players to shoot 70 or better on Wednesday, Seema pushed her way into a tie for 11th, notching a new career-best finish for the senior. An up-and-down first nine saw Seema make bogeys at Nos. 3, 5 and 9 around a pair of birdies at Nos. 4 and 7 to turn with a 1-over 37. A fourth bogey of the day would prove to be her last as she reeled off four birdies in the next six holes for a back-nine 33.

Sera Hasegawa notched a tie for 21st with a 3-over 75 on Wednesday. The senior made three bogeys on her outward nine and would fall to 5-over with two more at Nos. 11 and 13. Two holes later, she recorded her first birdie of the round at No. 15 and added another on her final hole of the week at No. 18.

Bridget Boczar finished tied for 26th in her Baylor debut with a 2-over 74 in the final round. The junior notched bogeys at Nos. 3, 6 and 8 around a lone birdie at No. 4 on the front nine. A fourth bogey at No. 12 dropped her to 3-over before playing the final six holes at 1-under on the strength of a birdie at No. 13.

Yoonjeong Huh finished tied for 53rd in her first event of the season. A 3-over opening nine included bogeys at Nos. 3, 4 and 8 surrounding a birdie at No. 5. A 4-over stretch at Nos. 12, 13 and 14 dropped her to 6-over for the day.

QUOTABLE:
Head coach Jay Goble on the team’s opening tournament— “I am very proud of this group. I also believe — from top-to-bottom — this could be one of the most talented teams I have ever had at Baylor. This team competed hard all week, and I love the way we came back on the back nine the last two days; it truly showed a lot of guts.”

Goble on Ashleen Kaur’s performance — “Ashleen played a lot of great golf and honestly just had two holes that kind of cost her a chance to win this tournament. There’s no doubt in my mind she will compete for a win this year.”
Goble on BaiMai Seema’s career-best finish — “Baimai is getting better every day. I am pumped for her to have her career-best finish this week. She played an amazing back nine today, and I'm happy to see her rewarded for good golf.

Goble on Bridget Boczar’s debut — “Bridget is going to be a great addition to our lineup. She is a very solid player and showed that the last two days."
