GRAND HAVEN, Mich. — On a day where just 10 players finished at even par or better, Baylor women’s golf held steady in fifth place at American Dunes Golf Club Tuesday.
One of the 10 players was Baylor sophomore Ashleen Kaur. Her 1-under 71 was the best round by a Bear so far this week, while Bridget Boczar also finished with an even-par 72 to jump 20 spots in the second round. At 1-over, Kaur enters the final round six shots back of the individual leader, Carolina Melgrati of Arizona.
Florida State stormed up the leaderboard on Tuesday, finishing with a 9-over 585, a one-shot ahead of second-place Arizona and its 10-over 586. Just seven shots separate the Bears and the Seminoles ahead of the final round on Wednesday.
THE RUNDOWN
Kaur carded Baylor’s first under-par round of the year and enters Wednesday in seventh place, individually. After an opening bogey, the sophomore responded with a birdie at No. 2, adding another at No. 6 to make the turn at 1-under par. She converted another bounce-back opportunity, erasing a bogey at No. 10 with a birdie at No. 11. A fourth birdie got her to 2-under on the round. At that point, she was working on the round of the day until a triple-bogey at No. 16 dropped her back over par. For the fourth time in six tries this week, Kaur responded to a dropped shot with a birdie, one of two to close out her round at Nos. 17 and 18.
Sera Hasegawa played another steady round with a 2-over 74 to move her into a tie for 11th. Falling to 2-over through five holes, the senior played her final four holes of the front nine at even-par with birdies at Nos. 7 and 9, around a double-bogey at No. 8. Turning at 2-over, she made a couple of bogeys at Nos. 11 and 15 but closed strong with birdies at Nos. 16 and 18.
BaiMai Seema shot a 3-over 75 for a second-straight round to move into a tie for 23rd. Bogeys at Nos. 3 and 5 saw her turn with a 2-over 38. Her first birdie of the day came at No. 11 to get to 1-over, but she dropped two more shots with a double-bogey at No. 14.
Boczar bounced back with an even-par 72 in the second round, jumping into a tie for 25th. An early double-bogey at No. 2 dropped Boczar over par, but she battled back with a birdie at No. 6 to make the turn with a 1-over 37. A second birdie at No. 12 got her back to even on the day ahead of a pair of dropped shots at Nos. 14 and 16. The Oakland transfer closed strong at No. 18 with one of just seven eagles this week.
Yoonjeong Huh moved into a tie for 43rd with a 6-over 78 on Tuesday. On the heels of four pars to open her round, Huh dropped three shots with a bogey at No. 6 and a double-bogey at No. 6 before closing with a birdie at No. 9 for a 2-over 38. A bogey at No. 11 was offset by a birdie at No. 14 before closing with a pair of doubles at Nos. 16 and 18.
