Bears get their fifth win of the season

WACO, Texas – The 23rd-ranked Baylor volleyball team beat No. 18 Minnesota in five sets on Friday night at the Ferrell Center for its fifth win of the season.

The Bears (5-0) handed the Gophers (1-2) a hard-fought loss in five sets in the second match of the Big Ten/Big 12 Challenge.  Winning the first set 25-22, Minnesota took the second set 25-16. Baylor stole away the third set, 25-21, leading to a win for UM in the fourth, 25-17. Baylor finished the final set, 16-14, adding another win to their record.

Elise McGhee led the squad with 18 kills and had a career-high four aces in the match. Jackie Barrett Frazier and Kendal Murphy each had a double-double, with Lauren Briseño digging 31 balls and Alicia Andrew recording five blocks.

THE RUNDOWN

Set 1
The Bears missed a few balls early that put Minnesota up 3-0 but fought back with an ace from Jackie Barrett Frazier to make it 3-2. UM added to the board making it 10-5, but BU lessened the gap by a run of three. Barrett Frazier continued a run of four with a dump over the net at 11-10. The Gophers raised the energy and made it 15-10, but the Bears pressed again, making it 15-13. Back and forth, BU and Minnesota tied up the set at 16-16, but BU recorded an ace and kill, getting ahead at 18-16. The Bears and Gophers continued back and forth, the score 20-20. Elise McGhee got a kill to put them up 21-20. The Bears fought, but Minnesota pressed again to finish it out, 25-23.

Set 2
Starting off on a high note, BU won the first point. The Bears continued the energy with kill by Alicia Andrew, making the score 3-0. BU added to the lead with block by McGhee. Letting up one, the Bears continue the battle with kill by Andrew, making it 5-1. McGhee served up an ace, helping BU push further ahead. A hot Baylor team saw Allie Sczech make it 8-1, prompting Minnesota to call time. The Gophers tried to chip away at the lead and fought to 12-8, still in Baylor's favor. The Bears came back ready with three kills and an ace from Kendal Murphy to keep them ahead, 17-8. Minnesota picked up the attacks, making the score 18-11, but Baylor didn’t let up and got up 20-13. The Bears brought the heat with an ace by McGhee, locking in a new career high for the senior. The energy continued, and the set ended with a kill by Sczech, 25-16.

Set 3
Tied at 1-1, Minnesota came with some energy and put the Gophers up 6-3 early. The Bears brought up the energy with two kills, breathing down Minnesota’s neck with the score at 6-5. Baylor added two with a kill and a block by Andrew and Frazier, 8-7. The teams tied it for a bit but at 11-11, the Bears went ahead with block by McGhee and Andrew. More back and forth ensued but Minnesota pulled ahead, 19-16, leading to a Baylor timeout. Tying it up again at 19-all were Murphy, McGhee and Frazier, prompting a timeout for the Gophers. McGhee put the Bears up by one, but Minnesota wasn’t done. Going back and forth, the Bears continued to light the fire with kills by McGhee. McGhee gave Baylor a two-point lead, and it was the senior and Sczech who finished off the at 25-21.

Set 4
Minnesota came out with a strong lead, 4-1. BU struggled but fought, the Gophers up by six at 9-3. Baylor got a point with a kill from Sczech, but Minnesota continued and went up 13-6, Baylor calling timeout. Staying ahead, Minnesota had a kill putting them 17-10. Baylor added two to the board after an ace by Tehani Ulufatu, the Gophers calling timeout with the score 17-12. After an ace, Minnesota remained ahead, 20-13. With continued energy after set 3, Minnesota came on top, 25-17.

Set 5
Coming into set 5, the Bears lead 3-1 after kill by Murphy and a Minnesota attack error. Keeping the Bears ahead, 5-2, a block by Frazier led Minnesota to ask for time. Kills by McGhee and Barrett Frazier put BU in the lead, 8-3. Both Baylor and Minnesota challenged plays but it was all Baylor, up 11-8. The Bears charged ahead after a block by Sczech and Bibinbe, the tension getting palpable. A long rally between the two teams led to a tied game at 13-13. Tied at 14-14, the Gophers had an attack error. With a kill by Andrew, the Bears finished the set and match on top, 16-14.

UP NEXT
Baylor returns to Ferrell on Saturday as they face No. 6 Wisconsin for the last match of the Big Ten/Big 12 Challenge. First serve is at 7 p.m. CT and is a white out.

The Badgers took TCU to five sets earlier in the day on Friday, winning 3-2.
