HOUSTON, Texas – No. 23 Baylor volleyball defeated Houston on the road on Wednesday night, 3-1, extending the winning streak against UH to eight.
The Bears (12-6, 4-3) took the win from the Cougars (8-10, 3-5) in four sets after dropping the first, 25-23, and winning the next three, 25-16, 25-17, 25-23.
Baylor was led by Elise McGhee with 16 kills, Jackie Barrett Frazier with 29 assists and 17 digs and Alicia Andrew with seven blocks, while both McGhee and Tehani Ulufatu had two aces each.
THE RUNDOWN
Set 1
Houston started the set on a 4-0 run but it was stopped by Kendal Murphy who had a reception kill for the Bears’ first point. Despite stopping the run, the Coogs went up 7-2. But with a UH attack error, momentum shifted, putting the Bears back in action. BU went on a run of their own, getting five in a row thanks to two kills from Elise McGhee and a solo block from Manuela Bibinbe, the score now tied at seven. The teams started to trade points, with Allie Sczech getting hot and getting the kill at 12-10. Alicia Andrew made it 13-12 with an overpass kill, and Sczech tied it up again at 14-all. UH began to pull away again and went up 17-14, BU calling for a timeout. McGhee scored twice out of the timeout, but the Cougars still pushed, Baylor asking for another pause at 21-17. Sczech hit it down the line after the timeout but UH kept pushing. Sczech and Andrew got a block at 23-19 and Lauren Briseño followed it with an ace, the Coogs calling for a pause this time. UH got one more kill, then an error before Bibinbe and Grace Carroll had a block, now having staved off set point twice, 24-22. Houston called time at 24-23 after Harley Kreck served an ace but a kill from a Cougar finished the set, 25-23.
Set 2
The Bears got the first point thanks to a UH attack error, but the Cougars followed it with two kills from Katie Corelli. Andrew stopped it at 2-2 with a kill of her own and the teams exchanged service errors, 3-3. A bad set from the Cougars made it 5-4 in their favor before the Bears got back on track. Carroll tied it up at five and then helped the Bears make it 9-7 with another kill before Bibinbe got an ace. McGhee got the point at 11-9, UH still in the lead. Andrew continued to get the overpass kill, this time at 12-11, and Sczech tied it up again with McGhee serving an ace just after to give her team the lead. Andrew had another kill which Murphy matched, now 15-13. After two more points went to the Bears via attack errors, Houston called timeout. Murphy scored again out of the timeout, but a Cougar got two kills in a row. After a UH service error, Tehani Ulufatu served an ace, 20-15. After a setter dump from Jackie Barrett Frazier followed by her winning a joust, Houston called a timeout, 22-16. An attack error from the Coogs was followed by a Victoria Davis solo block and then an assisted with Barrett Frazier to finish the set, 25-16.
Set 3
The set started with a Baylor challenge which was won, McGhee getting the kill. After a kill from UH, a Cougar served an error which prompted a four-point run from BU, including a block from the Allies and a kill from Sczech. McGhee got a kill to make it 6-2, then the Allies went up for another block at 8-3. Murphy got a kill at 9-6 to stop a quick run, Davis getting one for herself at 10-7. After a UH service error and two attack errors, the Cougars called timeout, 13-8. McGhee got a dart of a kill at 14-9 and Houston put two points on the board. After Baylor found itself only two points up on UH, 14-12, timeout was called. McGhee had a kill, Sczech had a kill to follow, and Andrew served up an ace at 18-13. Ulufatu had her second ace of the night at 20-14, prompting a timeout by Houston. Out of it, Davis had her second solo block of the night which was followed by a kill from McGhee, 22-14. Down to the wire, Barrett Frazier made it match point and an attack error from UH sealed it, 25-17.
Set Four
McGhee started the set once again with a kill, which UH matched. She seemed to have another at the next point but was called out; Baylor challenged and won the point. McGhee and Andrew got the block at 3-2, BU earned a point on an attack error and then UH went on a three-point run. It was finished with a kill from Sczech, 5-5, then Murphy adding. The Allies got the block at 7-6 but UH tied with a kill and followed with an ace, leading by one at 8-7. Murphy tied it again quickly, then Davis and Barrett Frazier went up for the block at 9-8 to take back the lead. The Bears turned it into a three-point run thanks to a UH attack error and another Murphy kill, now up 11-8 with Houston calling a timeout. Out of it, it was Davis and Murphy getting kills to go up 14-9. McGhee made them scramble with a thunderous kill at 16-10, and Andrew got herself a point at 18-12. McGhee served her second ace of the night at 19-12, then Sczech getting the 20th point for the Bears just after. Houston creeped closer on a three-point run, BU calling timeout at 20-16. The timeout worked as Murphy got the kill just after. She got another at 22-17, and Elise McGhee made it match point with a kill at 24-19. UH wasn’t done and staved off match point three times with a kill, then back-to-back blocks to come within two, 24-22. Baylor called timeout, but the Cougars had another kill to come within one. The match ended on a service error, BU winning the set 25-23.
